Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly does the code CF281X identify?

CF281X is HP's part number for the high-yield black cartridge in the 81X family. If your printer's supplies screen or the label on the cartridge you just pulled out carries that code, this is the unit to order — one black toner cartridge, rated at 25,000 pages.

How far does a 25,000-page rating go in a real office?

It depends on what fills your pages. Text documents — letters, reports, statements — land close to the rating. Pages packed with logos, shaded tables and solid graphics spend toner faster, so the same cartridge covers fewer of them. Most departments measure this cartridge in months rather than weeks.

Print is fading down one side of the page. Is it finished?

Not necessarily. Toner settles unevenly as the level drops. Take the cartridge out, rock it gently from side to side a few times to redistribute what is left, and put it back. That usually buys a run of clean pages, but treat it as a warning to have the replacement ready.

One cartridge really covers several different Enterprise models?

Yes. The CF281X serves a whole band of LaserJet Enterprise machines, from printers such as the Enterprise M605dh through the M630 multifunction series. That is why many offices standardise on this single code for every black-and-white Enterprise device on the floor.

How should the cartridge be stored before installation day?

Keep it sealed in its box, lying flat, in a normal room away from heaters, direct sun and damp. The packaging keeps dust and light off the cartridge, and a spare stored this way is ready the moment the installed one gives out.

What backing comes with this cartridge?

It is covered by a 1-year warranty and 1-year free returns. Orders leave the warehouse closest to you — we ship from Illinois, Pennsylvania, Georgia and California — and the details are on our shipping and returns page. Questions are answered by a real person Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM CST.
