HL-2242

Found in retail and warehouse-club bundles, the Brother HL-2242 is the twin of the HL-2240 with the same 24 ppm engine under the hood. It connects over USB 2.0 only, without Ethernet or Wi-Fi, and two-sided printing is done through manual duplex in the driver. It uses Brother TN420 toner (about 1,200 pages) or the high-yield TN450 (about 2,600 pages) with the DR420 drum.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which toner does the Brother HL-2242 use?

The HL-2242 uses the Brother TN420 standard-yield toner (~1,200 pages) or the Brother TN450 high-yield toner (~2,600 pages), plus the Brother DR420 drum unit (~12,000 pages).

What is the difference between the TN420 and the TN450?

Both fit the same printers. The TN450 is the high-yield version — it prints about 2,600 pages versus about 1,200 for the TN420 — so it costs less per page if you print a lot.

Are the cartridges on this page original or compatible?

Both — this page carries compatible TN420/TN450 and DR420 replacements as well as genuine Brother OEM TN420 and TN450 toner and DR420 drum.

How often does the DR420 drum need replacing?

The DR420 drum unit is rated for approximately 12,000 pages — roughly four to ten toner changes, depending on whether you use TN420 or TN450 cartridges.
