Frequently Asked Questions

The TN420 and TN450 look identical — what actually separates them?

Fill, and nothing else. Both cartridges serve the same long list of machines and slot in identically; the TN420 is the standard-yield fill at 1,200 rated pages, while the TN450 is the high-yield at 2,600. Price follows the fill: this cartridge at $68.41 works out around 5.7 cents a page, the TN450 about 3.6 cents. Light users pay less today with the TN420; anyone printing weekly should already be on the TN450.

Which printers take the TN420?

Nineteen models — one of the widest fitments Brother ever shipped. The HL-2130, HL-2132, HL-2220, HL-2230, HL-2240 series, HL-2250DN, HL-2270DW, HL-2275DW and HL-2280DW printers; the DCP-7060D and DCP-7065DN; the MFC-7240, MFC-7360N, MFC-7365DN and MFC-7460DN all-in-ones; and the Intellifax 2840 and 2940 fax machines. If your machine is from that generation, this is its standard black.

What drum does this cartridge work with, and how long does the drum last?

The DR420 drum unit, rated at 12,000 pages — the span of roughly ten TN420 cartridges. Toner and drum are separate consumables on this platform: the cartridge provides the powder, the drum transfers the image, and each is replaced on its own schedule. A 'replace drum' message is not a toner problem, and faded print is not a drum problem; the two warnings mean different purchases.

Is $68.41 a fair price for a 1,200-page genuine cartridge?

Test it against the cartridge's own list price: $95.77, so you are paying $27.36 under list for a factory-sealed Brother unit. Genuine standard-yield cartridges are never the cheapest way to print a page — the TN450 in this same family, and compatibles beyond it, both undercut the per-page figure — but for a sealed OEM cartridge at this yield, this sits where the genuine market sits, discounted.

Print is fading down one side of the page — cartridge or drum?

One-sided fading is the cartridge's signature: toner distributing unevenly as the fill runs low. Rock the TN420 gently side to side and the fade usually evens out for a few dozen pages. A drum, by contrast, marks the page — the same spot or line repeated at regular intervals in the same place on every sheet. Fading means order this; repeating marks mean look at the DR420.

How are returns and warranty arranged for this cartridge?

Returns are open for 30 days after delivery in every case, and the warranty is Brother's manufacturer warranty — those OEM terms in full are on our shipping and returns page. Our team is reachable Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM CST if the cartridge arrives anything other than perfect.
