The SF-650 is a fax machine, not a printer — why does it take a toner cartridge at all?

Because it prints every fax it receives onto plain paper using the same laser process as a printer. There is no ribbon or thermal roll involved: the incoming page is laid down in toner, and this MLT-D105L cartridge is where that toner lives. When the faxes fade, it is this cartridge that is finishing.

How many received faxes will one cartridge get through?

Work in pages rather than faxes, since a one-page confirmation and a twelve-page contract draw very differently. The cartridge is rated for up to 2,500 pages, so a line receiving about 25 fax pages a day runs for roughly a hundred days on one cartridge; a quieter line can forget about toner for most of a year.

Our faxes have been getting lighter over the last few weeks — is the cartridge finishing?

A slow, even fade across every incoming fax is the classic signature of a cartridge in its last stretch. Problems that arrive suddenly — one black page, one jammed mess — point elsewhere. Swap in a fresh MLT-D105L and the next fax should land at full density; if it does not, the machine itself wants attention.

What does a received fax cost us in toner?

About 1.58 cents per page: the cartridge costs $39.40 and is rated for up to 2,500 pages. A ten-page fax therefore carries roughly sixteen cents of toner — a useful figure if fax costs get allocated per client or per case.

Does this cartridge fit anything else we might own?
