Frequently asked questions

What toner does the Brother HL-L3300CDW use?

The Brother HL-L3300CDW uses TN229 standard-yield (approx. 1,500 pages black / 1,200 pages color), TN229XL high-yield (approx. 3,000 / 2,300 pages) and TN229XXL super high-yield (approx. 4,500 / 4,000 pages) toner cartridges, plus the DR229CL drum unit (approx. 20,000 pages).

What is the difference between TN229, TN229XL and TN229XXL?

All three fit the HL-L3300CDW. The TN229XL (also written TN-229XL) is the high-yield version — about 3,000 pages black / 2,300 pages color — and the TN229XXL is the super high-yield version — about 4,500 pages black / 4,000 pages color — versus about 1,500 / 1,200 for the standard TN229. Higher yield means a lower cost per page.

Does the Brother HL-L3300CDW need a drum unit?

Yes. The HL-L3300CDW uses the Brother DR229CL drum unit (also listed as DR-229CL), rated for about 20,000 pages. Replace it when print quality degrades — streaks, spots or faded prints — even if toner remains.

Are compatible TN229XXL toner cartridges safe for my Brother HL-L3300CDW?

Yes. Our compatible cartridges are engineered to meet or exceed Brother's specifications and are backed by a lifetime warranty. Using compatible cartridges does not void your printer's warranty.

Which cartridge is the best value for heavy printing?

For the heaviest printing, the TN229XXL super high-yield cartridge (about 4,500 pages black / 4,000 pages color) gives the HL-L3300CDW its lowest cost per page. For occasional printing, the standard TN229 is the most economical upfront.
