Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the yellow cartridge run down fastest on graphics-heavy work?
Because yellow does unseen work on almost every colour page. Beyond the obvious yellows, it is laid underneath greens, oranges, warm greys and most photographic tones as part of the colour mix, so a brochure or presentation deck draws on the TN229XXLY far more than a page count of "things that look yellow" would suggest. Add that graphics pages carry heavy coverage to begin with, and yellow becomes the slot that surprises people. On a text-led workload the same cartridge idles — which is why yellow consumption says more about your artwork than about the cartridge.
How do you tell this yellow is nearly spent when prints barely change?
Yellow is the hardest colour to judge by eye, because its early fading hides inside other colours. Watch the second-order signs: greens that used to print bright start leaning blue, warm highlights and cream backgrounds go cold, and photographs lose their sunlight. The printer's own toner gauge is the more reliable witness here — when it reports the TN229XXLY low, believe it rather than the page. Rocking the cartridge side to side and refitting can even out the remaining toner for a short run, long enough to get the replacement ordered.
What does a page of yellow cost on this cartridge?
At its rated coverage, about 4.7 cents: the TN229XXLY sells at $186.89 for a 4,000-page rating, and you are paying $74.76 under its $261.65 list price. Set that against the smaller classes on this platform — the high-yield TN229XLY works out at roughly 5.9 cents a page — and the super high-yield's case is plain: the bigger fill dilutes the genuine-cartridge premium over more pages. Heavy colour users feel that difference every cycle; a printer that touches colour twice a month will take years to feel it, which is the honest dividing line for this class.
Which printers take the TN229XXLY?
The nine TN229-platform models: HL-L3220CDW, HL-L3280CDW, HL-L3295CDW, HL-L3300CDW and HL-L8245CDW printers, and the MFC-L3720CDW, MFC-L3765CDW, MFC-L3780CDW and MFC-L8395CDW all-in-ones. It fills the yellow slot, alongside the TN229XXLBK black, the TN229XXLC cyan and the TN229XXLM magenta — and it can drop in beside standard or XL cartridges in the other slots, since the platform mixes yield classes freely. Check the spent cartridge's label before ordering: TN229XXLY is the super high-yield yellow, the largest fill this slot takes.
Is the super high-yield yellow worth it if my colour printing is occasional?
Honest answer: often not, and that is fine. A 4,000-page yellow only earns its price when the pages actually flow; in a printer that produces a colour page or two a week, the standard TN229Y or the XL TN229XLY will sit in the slot for years at a lower buy-in, and toner bought far beyond your usage is cash parked in a drawer. The TN229XXLY is for steady colour — marketing material, teaching packs, regular photo and chart work — where its lower per-page cost compounds. Match the class to the workload, not to the biggest number on the shelf.
How do returns and warranty work on this cartridge?
As genuine Brother stock, the TN229XXLY is returnable for 30 days in all cases, and warranty cover comes from Brother's manufacturer warranty — full details on our shipping and returns page. The longer cover described on other pages of this site applies to compatible cartridges, not to original Brother products. If anything is wrong with the cartridge on arrival, contact support Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM CST, inside the 30-day window.
