Frequently Asked Questions

What makes this 81A different from the one we usually buy?

The fill. This CF281A is the MICR version — its toner carries a magnetic component so the numbers along the bottom of a printed check can be read by bank processing equipment. It is made for the Enterprise M604n, fits exactly like the standard cartridge, and is priced at $137.86.

Why can't the regular cartridge print our checks?

It prints them beautifully — that's the trap. The characters look right but carry no magnetic signal, so the bank's readers can't process the line automatically. On the Enterprise M604n, switching to this MICR cartridge is what turns a good-looking check into a processable one.

How should we roll it out?

Carefully, once. Print a small test batch on your normal check stock, take samples to your bank for a scan check, and confirm before a live run. No seller can guarantee a bank's acceptance, since the reader, the stock and your software all share the result — the test is how you remove the doubt.

Is a single-function printer like the M604n a sensible check station?

Often it's the most sensible arrangement in the building. A printer that only prints — no shared copying queue, no walk-up jobs — keeps check stock and payment runs in one predictable place. Load the stock, fit this cartridge, and the routine stays the same every payday.

What's the yield?

10,500 pages, the standard CF281A rating. Against check work that's generous: each page holds a check, a stub and the MICR line, so the toner spent per payment is small, and one cartridge covers many runs before the M604n reports it low.

What happens if something's wrong with the cartridge?

It's backed by our 1-year warranty and 1-year free returns, and ships from our Illinois, Pennsylvania, Georgia or California warehouses. Support answers Monday–Friday, 9 AM–5 PM CST, terms are set out on the shipping & returns page, and the rest of the range is under HP.

About This M604n MICR Cartridge

The M604n asks for so little attention that offices forget it's there — until someone asks why the firm's checks still come from a pre-printed box at several times the cost. This cartridge is the answer: an 81A with MICR toner, a 10,500-page rating and a $137.86 price, plus the one instruction that matters — prove a test batch at your bank, then print your own.
