Our SCX-4623FW prints every fax that arrives, around the clock — does all of that come out of this one cartridge?

Yes, every sheet of it. A received fax is a printed page as far as the machine is concerned, and this MLT-D105L cartridge lays down all of them — the contracts you wanted and the junk faxes you did not. The cartridge cannot tell the difference, so on a busy fax line the incoming traffic is often the single biggest drain on its 2,500-page rating.

How long does 2,500 pages last on a desk that faxes and copies all day?

Count everything that leaves the machine. At a combined 40 pages a day of faxes, copies and prints, one cartridge covers roughly two months. At a gentler 15 pages a day it stretches past five months. The rating does not care which job produced the page — only the total matters.

What does one printed page cost us on this machine?

The cartridge is $39.40 and rated for up to 2,500 pages, which puts toner at about 1.58 cents per page whether that page was a print, a copy or an overnight fax. The one output that costs nothing in toner is a scan sent out by email, since nothing is printed at all.

Copies are coming out with a grey wash in the background — what should we check?

Run a page from the computer first. If that print is clean while copies look washed, wipe the scanner glass and try again — a dirty glass greys every copy. If prints show the same grey background, the cartridge itself is nearing the end of its life and laying toner unevenly, and a fresh one is the fix.
