This is the one cartridge both halves of the 312 family share. The compatible T312XL120-S black fits the Expression Photo HD XP-15000 and the Expression Photo XP-8500, XP-8600 and XP-8700 alike, because Epson's official cartridge tables list the same black code — T312XL120-S — for all four printers. It is a Claria Photo HD dye black rated up to 500 pages (ISO/IEC 24711), against 240 pages for the standard-capacity T312120-S.

The cartridge carries a new compatible chip for ink-level reporting. Honest note: this cartridge carries a new compatible chip. If your printer's firmware has been updated, recognition issues can occasionally occur — if a warning appears, reseat the cartridge firmly and restart the printer before assuming the cartridge is at fault. Its shelf-mates depend on your printer: every model also takes T312XL220-S cyan, T312XL320-S magenta and T312XL420-S yellow; the XP-15000 finishes its six slots with Gray and Red, the XP-8500 series with Light Cyan and Light Magenta — and those finishing cartridges are not interchangeable between the two layouts.
Covered by our lifetime warranty, with free returns for the first year. This is a Clever Supplies compatible cartridge, not a genuine Epson cartridge, and it is region-matched to US printers: the same models in Europe take the 378/478 family instead.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many pages does the T312XL120 black print?
Up to 500 pages, Epson's published XL rating for the genuine cartridge on the ISO/IEC 24711 pattern. The standard-capacity black (T312120-S) is rated 240 pages, so the XL roughly doubles your interval between swaps.
Which printers does this black fit?
All four verified models: Expression Photo HD XP-15000 and Expression Photo XP-8500, XP-8600 and XP-8700. Epson's own tables list T312XL120 for both layouts — it is the shared cartridge of the family.
Is the ink dye or pigment?
Dye. The whole Claria Photo HD family is dye-based, per Epson's own specification — that is what gives these printers their glossy photo colour. It is not a DURABrite pigment cartridge.
Does it have a chip?
Yes — a new compatible chip that reports ink levels. This cartridge carries a new compatible chip. If your printer's firmware has been updated, recognition issues can occasionally occur; reseating the cartridge and restarting the printer clears most false warnings.
My printer says the black is not recognised. What should I do?
Power off, remove the cartridge, check the chip contacts are clean and dry, reseat it until it clicks, and power back on. If a firmware update came just before the message, that is the likely trigger — contact us and we will work through it under the lifetime warranty.
Can I use this black with standard-capacity colours?
Yes. Each of the six slots is independent, so an XL black mixes freely with standard or XL colours already in the printer. Our colours are the XL tier: T312XL220, T312XL320 and T312XL420.
What are the other five cartridges in my printer?
Cyan (T312XL220-S), magenta (T312XL320-S) and yellow (T312XL420-S) everywhere. Then it splits: the XP-15000 adds Gray (T314XL720-S) and Red (T314XL820-S), while the XP-8500, XP-8600 and XP-8700 add Light Cyan (T312XL520-S) and Light Magenta (T312XL620-S). The Gray/Red pair does not fit the XP-8500 series, and vice versa.
Is this a genuine Epson cartridge?
No — it is a Clever Supplies compatible built to the T312XL120-S specification and labelled compatible on the box and on this page. It is not manufactured by Epson.
How much ink is inside, in millilitres?
We don't publish a figure: Epson's official documentation for this family does not state a millilitre volume, so the Volume field is left blank rather than filled with a reseller's claim. The verifiable figure is the 500-page ISO yield.
Will it work in a European XP-15000?
No. These printers are region-coded: US models take 312/312XL and 314XL, European models take the 378/478 family. This cartridge carries a US-region chip.
What does the lifetime warranty cover?
A cartridge that fails to perform — not recognised after troubleshooting, leaking, or printing poorly from new — is replaced under the lifetime warranty. Free returns apply within the first year.
Single, Set of 6, or the bulk box?
The single when only black is low. The Set of 6 refills every slot of your layout at once, and the Set of 13 bulk box (three blacks) suits photographers who print constantly — both are linked from this page, in XP-15000 and XP-8500-series versions.
