Why is this cartridge coded 314XL, not 312XL?

Because Epson says so. Its official XP-15000 cartridge table lists Gray and Red under 314XL — T314XL720-S and T314XL820-S — while black, cyan, magenta and yellow are 312/312XL. There is no T312 Gray to buy.

Which printer does the Gray fit?

Only the Expression Photo HD XP-15000. The XP-8500, XP-8600 and XP-8700 have Light Cyan and Light Magenta in their last two slots, not Gray.

How many pages does the Gray print?

Up to 4,000 pages on Epson's published rating (Epson Australia's official XP-15000 specification) — grey is consumed slowly, mostly in photo tones, which is why the figure dwarfs the colour ratings. Treat it as a ceiling under test conditions, not a promise per cartridge.

Is there a standard-capacity Gray?

No. Gray exists only as 314XL — Epson's table shows an empty standard column for both Gray and Red. Anyone selling a 'standard 314 Gray' is mislabelling something.

What does Gray ink actually do?

It gives the XP-15000 smooth, neutral black-and-white prints and finer shadow gradation in colour photos — grey tones are printed with grey ink instead of being mixed from cyan, magenta and yellow, which avoids colour casts in monochrome work.

Does the Gray cartridge have a chip?

Yes — a new compatible chip for ink-level reporting. This cartridge carries a new compatible chip. If your printer's firmware has been updated, recognition issues can occasionally occur; reseat and restart before assuming a fault.

The printer won't recognise the new Gray. Steps?
