XP-980 Ink — The 279XL Shelf
Epson's own support documentation for the XP-980 lists the full 279 code set: standard T279120 / T279220 / T279320 / T279420 / T279520 / T279620 and high-capacity T279XL120 / T279XL220 / T279XL320 / T279XL420 / T279XL520 / T279XL620. Our shelf carries the XL tier — the compatible ladder for this family is XL-only — rated at up to 500 pages for black and up to 740 pages per colour (ISO/IEC 24711), against 240 / 360 for the standard tier. There is no separate photo black in this family: code 120 is the black cartridge, and the two light colours, 520 light cyan and 620 light magenta, are what give this six-colour printer its smooth photo gradients.
One boundary keeps orders right, and it is the mistake this family's name invites most: the XP-960 is not a 279 printer. It belongs to the 277 family — Epson's own fact sheet and support pages say so — and 277 and 279 cartridges are not interchangeable, however similar the printers look. The XP-970, XP-950, XP-860 and XP-850 are 277 printers too. If your badge says XP-980, every cartridge on this page is yours; if it says anything else, it is not.
Which 279XL should you buy?
- One colour ran out: replace just that slot — black, cyan, magenta, yellow, light cyan and light magenta singles are $16.49 each.
- Full six-colour reset: the Set of 6 ($89.91) puts one of every cartridge in a single box.
- Stocked photo shelf: the Set of 13 ($185.06) carries three blacks and two of every colour — the pattern a photo printer actually consumes.
Chip, ink and everyday use
The honest chip note for this young printer: Epson states the XP-980 is designed for use with Epson cartridges only, and its firmware is current. Our cartridges carry new compatible chips, and this family went on sale only after a chip pilot test on the XP-980 itself. The ink is dye-based, so keep spare cartridges sealed until install day. If a firmware update ever precedes a recognition warning, reseat the cartridge and restart before judging it — and our lifetime warranty, with 1-year free returns, stands behind every cartridge regardless.
More printers that use 279XL ink
None — the XP-980 is the only printer on the 279 shelf. If your badge names a different model, its cartridges live on that model's own page, not here.
