XP-960 Ink — 277, Not 279
This page exists to settle a confusion the market keeps making — and Epson's own documents settle it: the 277 Fact Sheet names the XP-960, and its support page's SDS parts list carries all six standard and all six XL codes. The system is six individual Claria Photo HD dye cartridges: black (T277XL120, up to 500 pages) and T277XL220 / T277XL320 / T277XL420 / T277XL520 / T277XL620 at up to 740 pages each in the XL tier we stock (ISO/IEC 24711 and 24712 pattern; the standard tier rates 240 pages black and 360 per colour). Learn this family's one counter-intuitive fact and never unlearn it: 120 is the Black. There is no separate Photo Black cartridge in a 277 printer — the pattern other families teach does not apply here.
The 279 family belongs to one printer only — the XP-980 — and no 279 cartridge belongs in an XP-960. Listings that file this model under 279 contradict Epson's own documents; the support page and the Fact Sheet agree with each other, and this page follows them. Within the family, the code that matters most is 120: the family's only black.
Which 277XL should you buy?
- One colour ran out: replace just that colour — black, cyan, magenta, yellow, light cyan and light magenta singles are $11.99 each.
- Full refresh: the Set of 6 ($62.91) resets all six positions, all XL, in one box.
- Stocked shelf: the Bulk Set of 13 ($118.83) carries three blacks and two of each colour — built for heavy photo work.
Chip, ink and everyday use
Every cartridge carries a new compatible chip, so the XP-960 reports ink levels for all six positions. All six inks are Claria Photo HD dye — a photo ink set end to end, with the light cyan and light magenta positions doing the gradient work in skin tones and skies. Epson's official notices for this family say firmware updates can affect third-party ink; if a warning follows one, reseat the cartridge and restart first. The lifetime warranty covers every cartridge either way, with free returns in the first year.
