Light cyan is the reason XP-980 skies have no visible steps in them. This standard-capacity compatible T279520-S carries Claria Photo HD dye light cyan rated up to 360 pages (ISO/IEC 24711) — the pale partner that lays down the top of every blue gradient, where full-strength cyan alone would show grain. For a photo printer used on occasions, the standard tier matches how this cartridge is actually consumed: slowly, and mostly by landscapes.

It completes the blue side of a six-cartridge row that also holds the T279120-S black (up to 240 pages), the standard T279220-S cyan, T279320-S magenta, T279420-S yellow and T279620-S light magenta (up to 360 pages each). Light cyan and cyan are separate slots with separate jobs, and each can move up to its XL form — this one to the T279XL520-S, rated up to 740 pages — without disturbing the other. A new compatible chip reports ink levels; the firmware note in the questions below deserves a read before you fit it.
It fits one printer only — the Expression Photo XP-980 — and no other model: the XP-960 belongs to the 277 family. Covered by our lifetime warranty, with free returns for the first year.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does light cyan actually do that cyan cannot?
It prints pale blue without stippling. A dye printer makes light tones by spacing dots out; with only full-strength cyan, skies and water show that spacing as grain. Light cyan fills those areas with a weaker ink, so the gradient stays smooth.
How long does the standard light cyan last?
Up to 360 pages by Epson's ISO/IEC 24711 rating — the same as the other standard colours. In practice it is one of the slower slots to empty, because pale tones use little ink per page; heavy sky and sea printing is the exception.
Can I put a light cyan cartridge in the cyan slot, or the other way round?
No. The slots are keyed to their own cartridges, and the printer expects T279220 in the cyan position and this T279520 in the light cyan position. Swapping the pair confuses the colour mix even if a cartridge physically seats.
Which printer takes it?
The Expression Photo XP-980 alone. The XP-960, XP-970, XP-950, XP-860 and XP-850 are other families, whatever the names suggest.
Will the printer track its ink level?
Yes — it carries a new compatible chip that reports ink levels, so the on-screen gauge behaves as it does with a genuine cartridge.
What is the firmware note for this cartridge?
Straightforward: this cartridge carries a new compatible chip. If your printer's firmware has been updated, recognition issues can occasionally occur on current Epson models. Reseat the cartridge until it clicks and restart the printer; if a message persists, we sort it under the lifetime warranty.
Is light cyan a dye ink like the rest?
Yes. All six 279 cartridges are Claria Photo HD dye, light colours included — there is no pigment variant anywhere in this family.
My skies band even with a fresh light cyan. Why?
Check the nozzle pattern first — a partially blocked light cyan channel bands exactly like an empty one. If the pattern is complete, look at the paper setting: photo paper profiles use this cartridge far more than plain-paper settings do.
Can it run beside XL cartridges?
Yes, freely — slots are independent, and a standard light cyan next to XL workhorses is common, because this slot empties slowly anyway.
What is the millilitre volume?
Left blank on purpose: Epson's US documentation gives no millilitre figure for the 279 family, and a reseller's number is not a substitute. Use the 360-page ISO yield for comparison.
Is it made by Epson?
No — a Clever Supplies compatible built to the T279520-S specification, labelled compatible on the box and this page.
What warranty does it carry?
Our lifetime warranty: replacement if a cartridge fails to perform — unrecognised after troubleshooting, leaking, or printing poorly from new — with free returns in the first year.
