Light magenta is the cartridge behind the XP-980's portraits: it prints the pale pinks and skin tones that full-strength magenta can only reach by dotting coarsely. This standard-capacity compatible T279620-S carries Claria Photo HD dye light magenta rated up to 360 pages (ISO/IEC 24711), the right size for a home photo printer whose output comes in occasions, not in shifts.

In the six-cartridge row it partners the standard T279320-S magenta, alongside the T279120-S black (up to 240 pages) and the T279220-S cyan, T279420-S yellow and T279520-S light cyan (up to 360 pages each). The pair split the warm range between them — this cartridge at the delicate end, magenta at the saturated end — and this slot steps up alone to the T279XL620-S (up to 740 pages) whenever you want it to. A new compatible chip reports ink levels to the printer; the firmware note in the questions below is worth reading first.

It fits one printer only — the Expression Photo XP-980 — and no other model: the XP-960 belongs to the 277 family and takes none of these. Covered by our lifetime warranty, with free returns for the first year.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Why does a photo printer need a light magenta at all?

Faces. Pale pink made by spacing out full-strength magenta dots looks grainy at portrait distances; light magenta lays the same tones down smoothly. It is the cartridge that most separates a six-ink photo printer from a four-ink one.

What yield should I expect from the standard light magenta?

Up to 360 pages (ISO/IEC 24711), level with the other standard 279 colours. Portrait-heavy printing draws on it steadily but gently; it rarely empties first.

Light magenta and magenta — can I fit one in the other's slot?

No. They are separate, keyed slots: T279320-S magenta in one, this T279620-S light magenta in the other. The printer's colour mixing assumes both positions are filled as labelled.

    Which printers does it fit?

Only the Expression Photo XP-980. Not the XP-960, XP-970, XP-950, XP-860 or XP-850 — those are other cartridge families.

    Does it report ink levels?

Yes. A new compatible chip reports ink levels to the printer, so the gauge on screen tracks it like a genuine cartridge.

Any firmware warning I should know about?

The plain version: this cartridge carries a new compatible chip. If your printer's firmware has been updated, recognition issues can occasionally occur, because current Epson firmware is written for Epson cartridges. Reseat firmly, restart, and if a message persists we deal with it under the lifetime warranty.

Is the ink dye or pigment?

Dye — Claria Photo HD, as in every 279 cartridge. The family's smooth photo gradients depend on it.

Skin tones still look harsh after a fresh cartridge. What else could it be?

Run a nozzle check: a partly blocked light magenta channel shows up first in faces and pale pinks. Also confirm the paper type setting matches the paper — the light cartridges are used most heavily on photo profiles.

Can I mix this standard cartridge with XL versions elsewhere?

Yes. The six slots are independent; standard and XL cartridges coexist in the XP-980 without any setting to change.

How much ink is inside, in millilitres?

We do not state one: Epson's US documentation publishes no millilitre volume for this family, so the Volume field is left blank. Compare cartridges on the 360-page ISO yield.

Is this a genuine Epson cartridge?

No. It is a Clever Supplies compatible built to the T279620-S specification and labelled compatible on the box and on this page.

    What happens if it fails?

Our lifetime warranty replaces a cartridge that fails to perform — not recognised after troubleshooting, leaking, or printing poorly from new. Free returns apply within the first year.
