Yellow is the cartridge nobody watches until a print comes out wrong — greens go blue, golds go muddy — and this standard-capacity compatible T279420-S carries Claria Photo HD dye yellow rated up to 360 pages (ISO/IEC 24711). It is sized for the XP-980's real home rhythm: photographs printed when there is something worth printing, not a daily volume habit.

The full standard row in this printer is the T279120-S black (up to 240 pages) with T279220-S cyan, T279320-S magenta, this yellow, T279520-S light cyan and T279620-S light magenta at up to 360 pages each. Yellow has no light partner — it is a single slot doing the whole range — and it can be stepped up alone to the T279XL420-S (up to 740 pages) if it starts emptying ahead of the others, which it often does in landscape-heavy printing. A new compatible chip reports ink levels to the printer; the firmware note in the questions below is worth reading before installation.

It fits one printer only — the Expression Photo XP-980 — and no other model: the XP-960 belongs to the 277 family, not this one. Covered by our lifetime warranty, with free returns for the first year.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Why do my greens look blue when yellow runs out?

Because green is made from cyan plus yellow. As the yellow channel fades, the mix slides toward cyan and every leaf, lawn and lime turns bluish. A nozzle check confirms whether the yellow is firing at all.

What is the rated yield of the standard yellow?

Up to 360 pages (ISO/IEC 24711), the same rating Epson gives all five standard 279 colours. Bright, saturated images — summer landscapes especially — use yellow faster than the test pattern.

Is there a light yellow to go with it?

No. The 279 family's light cartridges are cyan and magenta only; yellow covers its whole range from one slot, which is also why it can empty sooner than its neighbours.

    Which printers accept the T279420?

Just the Expression Photo XP-980. Not the XP-960, XP-970, XP-950, XP-860 or XP-850 — close names, different families.

Can I replace only the yellow cartridge?

Yes. Each of the six cartridges is individually replaceable, and the printer flags them one at a time. Swap the empty slot and leave the rest alone.

    Does it carry a chip?

Yes — a new compatible chip that reports ink levels to the printer, so the XP-980's on-screen gauge works with it.

Should I worry about firmware updates?

Know the plain fact: this cartridge carries a new compatible chip. If your printer's firmware has been updated, recognition issues can occasionally occur on current Epson models, whose firmware is written for Epson cartridges. A firm reseat and a restart clear most cases; anything beyond that, we handle under the lifetime warranty.

    What ink type is it?

Claria Photo HD dye ink — the dye line used across all six 279 cartridges, chosen for photo colour rather than document pigment work.

Can a standard yellow sit beside XL versions of the other colours?

Freely. The six slots are independent; mixing standard and XL cartridges in one printer is normal and changes nothing about how each is read.

How many millilitres does it hold?

We leave the Volume field blank: no millilitre figure for this family is stated in Epson's US documentation, and we will not print a reseller's number as fact. The 360-page ISO yield is the figure to compare.

Is it a genuine Epson product?

No. It is a Clever Supplies compatible built to the T279420-S specification, labelled compatible on the box and on this page; Epson does not make it.

    What cover comes with it?

Our lifetime warranty — replacement for a cartridge that fails to perform, whether that is a recognition failure after troubleshooting, a leak, or poor printing from new — plus free returns within the first year.
