Which printer does it fit?

Only the Expression Photo XP-980 — the sole 279 printer. Nothing else in the XP line takes 279 cartridges; the XP-960, XP-970, XP-950, XP-860 and XP-850 are all 277-family printers.

What does light magenta actually do?

It prints the pale half of the magenta range. In portraits and soft-lit photos, full magenta lays down visible dots in light skin tones; light magenta blends them away. That is the visible difference between a four-colour and a six-colour photo printer.

How many pages does the T279XL620 print?

Up to 740 pages on Epson's ISO/IEC 24711 rating for the genuine cartridge. Portrait-heavy work draws on it faster than the mixed test pattern; documents barely touch it.

Does it have a chip?

Yes — a new compatible chip for ink-level reporting. This cartridge carries a new compatible chip. If your printer's firmware has been updated, recognition issues can occasionally occur; reseating and restarting usually clears a false warning.

Can I put magenta in this slot instead?
