MP Series
The Ricoh MP Series is Ricoh's multifunction laser line: workgroup machines that carry the printing load of a whole department from a single unit. Toner for the series comes down to two black cartridge families, and picking between them is simply a matter of matching the number to your machine. The 407823 is the high-capacity black cartridge for the MP 501SPF, rated at up to 25,000 pages. The 407316 is the black cartridge for the Aficio SP 401SPF, rated at up to 12,000 pages. Every cartridge listed on this page is a compatible replacement fitted with a full-page-yield chip, and both families are sold as single cartridges and in 2-packs, 3-packs, 5-packs and 10-packs.
What defines the MP Series is stamina. A cartridge rated at up to 25,000 pages can keep a busy department running for months between changes, so the cost of the series is less about the cartridge itself and more about never letting the machine sit idle waiting for one. Offices that print all day tend to hold the larger multipacks on the shelf and reorder on a rhythm; smaller teams on the SP 401SPF get the same convenience from the 407316 at a lower volume. The directory at the bottom of this page lists the four MP model pages — MP 401SPF, MP 501SPF, MP 501SPFTL and MP 601SPF — and each model page gathers the supplies sold for that specific machine.

Which cartridge should you buy?
Start with the model name on your machine rather than the cartridge you just pulled out. If you run an MP 501SPF, your cartridge is the 407823; the MP 401SPF page covers the 407316 family. Owners of the MP 501SPFTL or the MP 601SPF should open their own model page, where the supplies for those machines are listed separately. Then choose a pack size by volume: a single 407823 already covers up to 25,000 pages, so a light user needs nothing more, while an office printing every day pays less per cartridge with a 5-pack or 10-pack and never runs dry in the middle of the month.
Chip, toner and everyday use
Each cartridge in both families carries a chip that the machine reads for toner-level reporting, so a fresh cartridge registers as full the moment it clicks into place. Page ratings are measured under standard test conditions; dense documents, heavy graphics and long copying runs consume toner faster than the rated figure, which is why the gauge on a hard-worked machine can fall sooner than expected. When output starts to fade, remove the cartridge and rock it gently from side to side to redistribute the toner inside — that usually carries you through the last pages while the replacement is on its way. Keep spare cartridges sealed, stored flat and away from heat and direct light. Every compatible cartridge sold here comes with a 1-year warranty and 1-year returns.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do all Ricoh MP Series machines use the same toner cartridge?
No. The MP Series runs on more than one cartridge family: the MP 501SPF takes the 407823, and the Aficio SP 401SPF takes the 407316. The two are not interchangeable, so match the cartridge number to the model before you order — your model page lists exactly what fits your machine.
How many pages will I get from a 407823 cartridge?
The 407823 is rated at up to 25,000 pages, and the 407316 at up to 12,000 pages. Those are maximum ratings measured on standard test pages; a real office mix of letters, reports and forms will land somewhere below the headline number, and heavy coverage lands lower still.
Should I buy a single cartridge or a multipack?
Both families are sold as singles and in 2-packs, 3-packs, 5-packs and 10-packs, and the larger packs lower the cost per cartridge. If your machine prints every day, a multipack keeps a spare ready and cuts down on reordering; if it prints only occasionally, a single cartridge is the sensible buy.
Will my machine recognize a compatible cartridge?
Yes. These cartridges carry a full-page-yield chip, so the machine detects the cartridge and tracks the remaining toner the same way it does with an original cartridge.
