XP-440 Ink — 288XL, With the Firmware Note Up Front
Epson's own FAQ for the XP-440 / XP-446 documents this family's chip behaviour — including a replaced cartridge that keeps reading as expended — and third-party reports list the XP-440 among models where a firmware update stopped previously working compatible cartridges from being recognised. We do not hide that. The ink itself is the family's standard story: standard tier 175 / 165 pages, XL tier 500 black / 450 per colour (ISO/IEC 24711), DURABrite Ultra pigment throughout, and our shelf is the XL tier: T288XL120 black and T288XL220 / T288XL320 / T288XL420 colours.
Nothing on this page fits a 220 or 822 printer. Within the family, the XP-440 takes the same four cartridges as every 288 model on this shelf — the badge, not the bundle, is what decides fit.
The same 288XL shelf serves the whole family roster — XP-330, XP-340, XP-430, XP-434, XP-446 — so one cartridge list covers every model on it, and a spare bought for any of them fits the rest. The ink is pigment throughout: prints come off the page dry, text stays sharp, and a highlighter passes over a page without smearing it — the behaviour school and office paper actually needs.
Which 288XL should you buy?
- One colour ran out: replace just that colour — black, cyan, magenta and yellow singles are $13.49 each.
- Full refresh: the Set of 4 ($47.94) replaces all four positions in one box.
- Print every week: the Set of 9 ($94.37) stocks three blacks and two of each colour.
Chip, ink and everyday use
Our cartridges carry new compatible chips; we recommend turning off automatic firmware updates on this model and updating deliberately. If a warning ever follows an update, reseat the cartridge and restart first — and every cartridge is backed by a lifetime warranty, with 1-year free returns, if it will not perform.
