Frequently Asked Questions

How quickly will a busy office drain a 1,500-page cartridge in the SCX-3400FW?

Sooner than the same office would guess, because this machine has three ways of spending toner: the printing you send it, the copies you make on it, and the faxes it prints as they arrive. A combined fifty pages a day empties the MLT-D101S in about six working weeks; twenty-five a day stretches it to roughly three months. Add up all three streams before you judge the cartridge's life.

The first cartridge in my SCX-3400FW did not last long — will this one do better?

It should, by a wide margin. Machines of this class are generally supplied with a small starter cartridge, and its short life reflects its small fill rather than the machine's appetite. This MLT-D101S is a full-size unit rated at the complete 1,500 pages, so the replacement is the first cartridge that shows the SCX-3400FW's true running pattern.

How can I plan the next cartridge from the SCX-3400FW's page count?

Machines of this generation can produce a supplies or configuration report showing the total pages printed. Divide that count by the months the current cartridge has been fitted and you have your true monthly draw across prints, copies and faxes. Order when the arithmetic says the current fill has a few weeks left, and the replacement is on the shelf before the fade arrives.

What does this cartridge cost per printed page?

At $32.73 for a 1,500-page rating, roughly 2.18 cents a page — and that rate applies to copies and received faxes too, since they print from the same cartridge. If the SCX-3400FW's combined volume is heavy, the five-pack of this same MLT-D101S cuts the figure towards 1.2 cents a page; for a single cartridge at a time, 2.18 cents is the honest number to budget on.

Does scanning or sending a fax on the SCX-3400FW use toner?

Neither does. Scanning turns paper into a file and never touches the cartridge, and sending a fax is a scan followed by a phone call — again, no toner. What spends toner is everything that comes out on paper: your prints, your copies and faxes you receive. That distinction explains why a scan-heavy office sees a cartridge last far longer than a copy-heavy one.

What cover comes with this compatible cartridge?

A one-year warranty as standard, with free returns running for the same year. Should the cartridge fault — leaking, streaking or an early failure — it comes back to us at no cost, as set out on the shipping and returns page. Support is available Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM CST, and orders leave from our IL, PA, GA and CA warehouses.
