WorkForce WF-4640

WF-4640 Ink Cartridges — The 786XL Shelf

The WF-4640 shares its Epson cartridge documentation with the WF-4630: the same standard 786 and high-capacity 786XL code set, the same DURABrite Ultra pigment ink, the same XL yields — T786XL120 black up to 2,600 pages, T786XL220 cyan, T786XL320 magenta and T786XL420 yellow up to 2,000 pages each (ISO/IEC 24711). One shelf honestly serves both models, and ours is the XL tier in singles plus a Set of 4.

Like its sibling, this model sits outside the T788XXL list. XXL codes in this family fit only the WF-5110, WF-5190, WF-5620 and WF-5690 — never the WF-4640 — so an XXL listing for this printer is a listing error, not an upgrade path.

Which 786XL should you buy?

One color ran out: replace just that color — black, cyan, magenta and yellow singles are $19.49 each.
Full refresh: the Set of 4 ($67.44) replaces all four positions in one box.

Chip, ink and everyday use

A note on chips, stated plainly: these cartridges are chipped, and Epson's own manuals warn that a firmware update can stop a non-Epson cartridge that worked before it. Ours carry new compatible chips, with ink levels reporting as normal; reseat and restart first if a warning follows an update. The DURABrite Ultra pigment ink dries on contact and resists smudging — the right behavior for office documents. Lifetime warranty and 1-year free returns stand behind every cartridge. At the XL yields, a Set of 4 carries a small office through roughly 2,600 black pages before the black position needs attention again — the practical reason this family's shelf is XL-only. The four positions are independent, so a color can be changed mid-set without touching the others, and a sealed spare set in the drawer means the printer never waits on a delivery. Reorder by the code on the cartridge you remove, and this page is the whole job.
