Does the bottle have a chip?
No chip at all — bottles are mechanical refills. Keyed nozzle in, fill stops automatically at full, cap back on. There is no recognition error for the printer to raise.
Why do these printers ship with two black bottles?
Because black is the high-turnover position in business printing. Epson boxes the Pro models with two blacks (three on the ST-C8000) so the first refill cycle is covered; this single is how you keep that rhythm going.
My printer is an ET-16500. Is this my black?
No — and this is a genuinely confusing name. The ET-16500's black is the 774 bottle (its colors are 664). The 542 wide-format models are the ET-16600 and ET-16650. Check the full badge number before ordering.
Can I top up a tank that still has ink in it?
Yes — topping up the same family's pigment ink is standard EcoTank practice. Never mix families; 542 pigment in a dye-family tank (or dye in this printer) is exactly what Epson's warning is about.
