Which cartridge should you buy?

Occasional color — a logo on letters, the odd highlighted report — is standard-yield work: the TN110 cartridges cost less to put on the shelf and their 1,500-page color rating still lasts a light user a long time. When color becomes a weekly habit, move to TN115. The jump from 1,500 to 4,000 pages per color is the largest saving this machine offers, and black doubles from 2,500 to 5,000 pages at the same time. There is no need to change all four together: the cartridges are separate, so replace the one the machine flags and leave the rest. Offices that burn black between color changes can stock the TN115 black multipacks and buy colors one at a time.

Chip, toner and everyday use

The MFC-9440CN reads each cartridge separately, so a low cyan warning says nothing about the black — check the on-screen levels before assuming a full set is due.
