Think of the ML-5017 as running two consumable tracks: the MLT-D307S supplies toner powder, and the MLT-R307 imaging unit provides the drum that transfers it to the page. The cartridge empties with use; the imaging unit degrades with rotations and age. You'll swap in several MLT-D307S cartridges for every MLT-R307.

Can eco power settings interfere with print quality on the ML-5017?

Leaving the ML-5017 on around the clock won't drain the MLT-D307S while it idles, but the warm, powered components accumulate wear over time. Sleep mode offers nearly the same convenience with far less stress on the hardware. Overnight and on weekends, sleep — or fully off — beats sitting in 'ready' mode.

Does duplexing affect toner coverage calculations on the ML-5017?

Duplex mode doesn't make the ML-5017 lay down extra toner: coverage on each face of the sheet is unchanged, so your MLT-D307S empties at the same rate either way. The savings are purely in paper, which still matters in a high-volume office. Envelopes, labels, and very heavy stock shouldn't go through duplex runs — they're jam-prone.
