Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a toner cartridge?

No — and the distinction matters. The MLT-R116 is a drum unit, the component that transfers the toner image onto the paper; it contains no toner of its own. The toner in these printers lives in separate cartridges (the MLT-D116L and MLT-D116S, listed separately), and one drum typically outlasts several toner cartridges before it needs replacing. Ordering this when you are out of toner — or toner when the drum is worn — will not fix your printing.

How do I know the drum, rather than the toner, is the problem?

Drum wear has a signature: repeating marks or spots down the page, a grey background haze, streaks, or print that stays faded even with a fresh toner cartridge fitted. Because the drum surface images every page, its defects repeat at regular intervals down the sheet. Toner problems, by contrast, usually show as overall lightness that a new cartridge cures. If a fresh toner changed nothing, the drum is the next suspect.

How long does a drum unit last?

The MLT-R116 is rated for about 9,000 pages of drum life. In practice that means it spans several toner cartridges: at typical office volumes a single drum serves for a long stretch of the printer's life, and many machines will need only one or two drum changes in total. The printer tracks the count and will flag the drum as it approaches the end of its rated life.

What does the drum cost work out to per page?

At $82.75 spread over a rated life of 9,000 pages, the drum's share of each page is under a cent — around 0.92 cents. It is one of the cheapest per-page components in the machine precisely because it is replaced so rarely, which is why renewing it beats living with degrading print quality once wear symptoms appear.

Which printers does this drum fit?

The MLT-R116 serves Samsung's Xpress SL-M2625D, SL-M2675F, SL-M2825DW, SL-M2835DW, SL-M2875FD and SL-M2885FW. The swap is straightforward: open the front cover, remove the toner cartridge to reach the drum beneath, lift the old unit out by its handle, seat the new drum, and refit the toner cartridge on top.

What cover does the drum unit carry?

As a Clever Supplies compatible unit it is backed by a one-year warranty, and returns are free during the first year if it faults or underperforms. The process is described on our shipping & returns page; support is available Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM CST, and orders ship from our Illinois, Pennsylvania, Georgia or California warehouses.

About This Samsung MLT-R116 Drum Unit

The MLT-R116 is the drum unit for Samsung's Xpress SL-M2625, SL-M2675, SL-M2825, SL-M2835, SL-M2875 and SL-M2885 printers, rated at 9,000 pages and priced at $82.75. It works alongside the MLT-D116L and MLT-D116S toner cartridges, imaging every page they print; because it wears slowly, it is the component behind print defects that survive a toner change — repeating spots, background haze and stubborn streaks. In our Samsung compatible range the unit is covered by a one-year warranty and free returns through the first year.
