Frequently Asked Questions

What should I expect from this cartridge in an ML-2164W used at home?

A long, uneventful run. The MLT-D101S is rated at 1,500 pages, and home printing — a few letters, forms and documents a week — draws on that slowly. Many home ML-2164W owners measure a cartridge's life in seasons rather than weeks, and because toner does not dry out between jobs, the cartridge delivers its pages whenever you ask for them, however spread out the asking is.

Why did the first cartridge in my printer run out so much faster?

Because it was almost certainly a starter cartridge. Compact lasers of this generation typically ship with a small introductory fill intended to get the machine printing, not to demonstrate its economy. This replacement is a full-size MLT-D101S with the complete 1,500-page rating, so the contrast in lifespan is real and expected — the second cartridge is the one that shows what the printer actually costs to run.

What does 1,500 pages cost me per week at a home pace?

Very little. If the ML-2164W prints, say, 25 pages a week, one $32.73 cartridge lasts a little over a year — which works out to roughly 60 cents of toner a week. Even doubling that pace keeps the weekly figure near a dollar. It is a useful way to see this cartridge: not a $32.73 purchase so much as a year or so of printing bought in advance.

Is this the same cartridge other Samsung models use?

Yes, the MLT-D101S is shared across the family. It is listed for the ML-2165W, SCX-3400F, SCX-3400FW, SCX-3405, SCX-3405FW and SCX-3405W as well as the ML-2164W. Match by the code on the cartridge you remove — that number settles the question regardless of which model name is printed on the machine.

How do I fit it, and what should I check afterwards?

Open the printer, lift out the empty unit, remove the new cartridge's sealing strip, rock it gently side to side to level the toner, and slide it home until it seats. Then print a page you know well — a letter or form: the text should be solid black and even. Pale output on a first print usually means the strip was not fully pulled or the unit is not seated; both take seconds to correct.

What cover backs this purchase?
