Frequently Asked Questions

The cartridges coming out of my 5550 carry unfamiliar numbers. What should the new ones say?

They should read as the HP 645A family: C9730A on the black, C9731A on the cyan, C9732A on the yellow and C9733A on the magenta. That quartet — $610.91 as a set — is the supply the Color LaserJet 5550 was built around, whatever branding the outgoing cartridges carried.

What is in the set, exactly?

One cartridge per color slot, four in total: black, cyan, yellow and magenta in the codes listed above. There is no fifth element to order — fitting the four completes the machine's toner system in full.

How many pages does each cartridge cover?

The black C9730A is rated at 13,000 pages; the cyan, yellow and magenta are each rated at 12,000 pages. Ratings assume standard coverage, so a 5550 producing full-color A3 posters will spend the color ratings faster than one printing office documents.

Large-format color work is this machine's specialty. What does that mean for the set?

Big sheets carry big coverage. A ledger-size color graphic can lay down several times the toner of a text page, which is why departments doing display work treat the 12,000-page color ratings as ceilings rather than promises — and why starting a big run on a fresh set is the safe habit.

Does the order in which the four are fitted matter?

No — work through the slots in whatever order is comfortable, seat each cartridge fully, then close the machine and allow its calibration cycle to finish before printing. A single test page afterwards confirms all four channels together.

How is a problem cartridge handled under this set's cover?

Bring it to our support team first, Monday–Friday, 9 AM–5 PM CST, so the faulty unit can be identified before anything is sent back. Behind that sits a 1-year warranty and 1-year free returns on the set, with the shipping & returns page setting out the steps in order.

About This 645A Set for the Color LaserJet 5550

The Color LaserJet 5550 brought A3 color to the departmental printer, and its appetite for toner follows its output: large, coverage-rich pages that reward a complete, balanced set. Renewing all four 645A cartridges together keeps color even from the first sheet to the last.

Your set ships from whichever of our IL, PA, GA and CA warehouses is closest, and the rest of the HP range covers single-cartridge top-ups whenever one color runs ahead of the others.
