EcoTank Photo ET Ink — The Six-Bottle 552 Family The ET-8500 and ET-8550 print from six tanks, and the 552 family is built to match: one pigment black for text (T552020, up to 6,700 pages) and a five-bottle dye set for images — Photo Black (7,300), Cyan, Magenta and Yellow (6,200 each) and Gray. The shades between black and white are this family's reason to exist: the Gray bottle is what gives these printers their smooth black-and-white gradations and neutral mid-tones.
About that Gray number, because it draws questions: Epson rates the Gray bottle at 46,600 pages — in its current specification sheets, verbatim. The figure is real but easy to misread: on the ISO/IEC 24712 document pattern a photo printer sips gray ink, so the bottle measures out enormous. Photo printing consumes ink far faster, and Epson says so in its own footnote — photo yields are measured separately on ISO/IEC 29103 and are significantly lower. We print Epson's official figure with its context rather than the smaller number some resellers substitute, which appears in no current Epson document.
