Photo black is where a printed photograph keeps its drama: the true blacks in a night sky, the shadow detail in a portrait's hair, the depth that separates a print from a picture of a print. Our compatible T552120-S bottle refills that tank with 70 mL of dye photo black ink, rated up to 7,300 pages on the ISO/IEC 24712 pattern with Epson's methodology — the highest document-pattern rating in the 552 family.

Dye is the correct chemistry, and Epson specifies it for this position: it sinks evenly into glossy and luster papers and blends with the dye colors around it, so shadows graduate instead of posterizing. (Epson's own footnote adds the honest context for this photo family: photo yields, measured on ISO/IEC 29103, are significantly lower than document yields — a big glossy print uses far more ink than a test page. We print both facts rather than letting the 7,300 stand alone.)
Know the family split before you order: this printer has two blacks. Photo Black (this bottle, dye, T552120) is for images; Black (T552020) is pigment and is for documents. Different tanks, different keying, no substitutes. The bottle is chipless with an auto-stop EcoFit fill, fits the EcoTank Photo ET-8500 and ET-8550, and carries our lifetime warranty with free returns for the first year.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is photo black for, in one sentence?
Photographs: it lays down the deep, neutral, glossy blacks and shadow gradations that the pigment document black isn't formulated to produce.
What yield should I expect from it?
Up to 7,300 pages on the ISO/IEC 24712 document pattern — the highest in this family. For actual photo printing, Epson's own footnote applies: photo yields are based on ISO/IEC 29103 and are significantly lower. Large, dark prints use this bottle fastest.
How is it different from the regular black bottle?
Chemistry and job. This is a dye ink for the photo black tank; the T552020 Black is a pigment ink for documents. The bottles are keyed to their own tanks and cannot be swapped.
Which printers take this bottle?
The EcoTank Photo ET-8500 and the wide-format ET-8550 — the only two 552 models, confirmed in Epson's Fact Sheet and Ink Finder listings.
My B&W prints look flat and shadows are muddy. Related?
Quite possibly: black-and-white work leans on photo black (with gray) for its shadow range. A low or empty photo black tank flattens exactly those tones. Refill, run a nozzle check, reprint the same image.
Does the bottle contain a chip?
No chip. The refill is mechanical: keyed nozzle, auto-stop at full. Nothing electronic can be rejected by the printer.
Can I print documents with photo black only and skip the pigment bottle?
The printer decides which black a job uses; documents route to the pigment black tank. Keeping both filled is how the system is designed to run — starving the pigment tank doesn't redirect text to this bottle.
Is this the same photo black as the 512 family's?
No. The 512 photo black (T512120-S) serves the ET-7700/ET-7750 and Epson publishes no separate yield for it; this 552 bottle is a different bottle, for different printers, with a published 7,300-page document rating.
What happens if I confuse it with the black bottle at refill time?
Nothing bad — the keyed nozzle simply won't seat on the wrong tank. That physical check is the EcoFit design doing its job.
How do I store an opened bottle?
Capped, upright, room temperature, out of direct sunlight.
Is this genuine Epson ink?
No — a Clever Supplies compatible bottle built to the T552120-S specification and labeled compatible on the box and this page.
What cover applies?
Our lifetime warranty — a bottle that fails to perform is replaced — plus free returns within the first year.
