The printer has four toner positions — why does this set hold five cartridges?

The fifth cartridge is a shelf spare. Four go into the machine as a complete load; the fifth waits in the cupboard so that the first position to run dry — whichever color that turns out to be — can be refilled the same hour instead of after a delivery. On a production machine, that gap between "empty" and "printing again" is what the spare exists to close.

Which color is the spare?

The set is built from the same four part numbers as the standard load — black 106R01080, cyan 106R01077, magenta 106R01078 and yellow 106R01079 — with the fifth cartridge drawn from those same numbers. In practice the spare earns its keep on whichever position fades first, and on a color-heavy 7400 that is very often one of the colors rather than the black.

What are the ratings of the cartridges in the box?

All five are high yield. The black 106R01080 is rated at up to 15,000 pages; the cyan 106R01077, magenta 106R01078 and yellow 106R01079 are rated at up to 18,000 pages each, all on the standard 5% coverage measure. Dense graphics work draws the colors down faster than those figures suggest, which is precisely the workload the spare is planned around.

Which Phaser 7400 models does this set fit?

All of them: the Phaser 7400, Phaser 7400DFX, Phaser 7400DN, Phaser 7400DT and Phaser 7400DX, and the finisher-equipped DXF. Configuration letters change paper handling and finishing, never the cartridge fitting.

How should the spare cartridge be stored?

Sealed in its box, flat, in a dry room away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Kept that way, a toner cartridge waits patiently for a long time; the habits that shorten its life are a damp store room, a spot next to a radiator, or opening the bag months before the cartridge is needed.
