Frequently Asked Questions

Our C480FW copies color documents all day — do copies spend this yellow too?

Yes, every color copy is a print. When the machine copies a color original, it lays down the same four toners a printed page would use, and a day of copying color handouts, forms and charts draws on the CLT-Y404S just as surely as printing them from a computer would. Offices that think of their machine as "the copier" are often surprised by how fast the colors move — the copying, not the printing, is doing it.

What about scanning and incoming faxes — do they use yellow?

No. Scanning produces a file, not a page, so it uses no toner of any color. Incoming faxes are printed in black only, by the black cartridge. That split is worth knowing when you budget supplies for a C480FW: color copying and color printing are what spend this yellow, while the scanning and fax traffic passing through the same machine costs it nothing.

Is this the yellow for the Xpress C480FW?

It is. The CLT-Y404S is the listed yellow cartridge for the Xpress C480FW, and the same supply also fits the Xpress C430, Xpress C430W and Xpress C480. Match the code on the cartridge you take out — the black in this family is the CLT-K404S, rated at 1,500 pages, and the cyan and magenta are separate cartridges under their own codes, each changed when its own level runs down.

How long will 1,000 pages last a machine that copies as much as it prints?

The CLT-Y404S is rated at 1,000 pages at the standard 5% coverage, and color copies of real documents frequently carry more color than that — a copied page with a shaded form, a logo and a chart can draw two or three times the standard measure. A copy-heavy C480FW will therefore work through this cartridge noticeably faster than the rating suggests. Watching the level rather than the calendar, and reordering at the warning, is the reliable approach.

How is the cartridge sold, and what does it cost?

Singly — one CLT-Y404S for $76.50, with no multi-pack option for this color. Spread over the rated 1,000 pages that is about 7.65 cents of yellow per standard page. On a compact all-in-one that prints, copies, scans and faxes from one set of small cartridges, that per-color, as-needed buying is simply how the machine is designed to be run.

What cover comes with this compatible cartridge?

A one-year warranty against defects, plus free returns at any point during the first twelve months — the full terms are set out on our shipping and returns page. Support is available Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM CST, and orders are dispatched from our IL, PA, GA and CA warehouses, so a replacement ordered when the warning appears is not a long wait.
