Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the black cartridge on a color printer empty long before the colors do?

Because most of what a compact color printer actually produces is text. Letters, invoices, forms and reports are printed by the black cartridge alone, while cyan, magenta and yellow are only called on for the colored elements of a page — a logo, a chart, a photograph. The CLT-K404S therefore does the daily heavy lifting in an Xpress C430 or C480, and it is entirely normal for it to run down several times over while the color cartridges are still showing healthy levels.

What does the 1,500-page rating mean for the printing I do?

The CLT-K404S is rated at 1,500 pages measured at the industry's standard 5% coverage — roughly a page of ordinary text. Correspondence and paperwork land close to that figure. Pages carrying dense graphics, shaded tables or full-color images spend toner faster and pull the real total down, so treat 1,500 as the yardstick every cartridge is measured with rather than a promise for photo-heavy work.

The cartridge I removed is stamped CLT-K404S — is this listing that same supply?

Yes. The code printed on the cartridge itself is the reliable way to reorder, and this listing is the compatible CLT-K404S in black. Matching on the code matters more than matching on the printer's name, because this one supply serves several machines in the Xpress color range.

Which printers does this cartridge fit?

The CLT-K404S is the listed black supply for the Samsung Xpress C430, Xpress C430W, Xpress C480 and Xpress C480FW. The three color companions sit in their own slots under their own codes — CLT-C404S cyan, CLT-M404S magenta and CLT-Y404S yellow — and each is replaced separately, only when its own level runs down.

What does a page from this cartridge actually cost?

At $50.62 for a rated 1,500 pages, the black works out at about 3.37 cents a page. That is the honest arithmetic of a compact home and small-office color printer: the machine is inexpensive and desktop-sized, and its supplies are priced per cartridge rather than per thousand pages. Judging the cartridge on its price per page — and ordering when the low-toner warning appears rather than when pages fade — is the way to run it sensibly.

What cover stands behind this compatible cartridge?

A one-year warranty against defects, and free returns at any point during the first year if the cartridge is not right for you — the full wording is on our shipping and returns page. If you have a question before or after fitting it, support is available Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM CST.
