Frequently Asked Questions

This listing's headline says CLT-404S, but my printer asks for CLT-K404S — is it the same cartridge?

It is. CLT-404S is the name of the cartridge family; the letter after it says which color the individual cartridge holds. K is the black — this listing — while CLT-C404S, CLT-M404S and CLT-Y404S are the cyan, magenta and yellow companions. A printer asking for CLT-K404S is asking for the family's black, and that is exactly what is sold here.

Who should buy a single cartridge rather than a pack?

Anyone whose printing is occasional. If the printer produces a few letters and documents a week, one CLT-K404S at $50.62 covers a long stretch, and there is no benefit in tying money up in spares that will sit in a drawer. The two-, three- and five-cartridge packs in this same listing family exist for busier desks; the single is the right size for a light workload, honestly judged.

How long will 1,500 pages last in a home office?

Longer than the number suggests. A home office printing, say, forty pages a week works through roughly 2,000 pages a year, so a single cartridge rated at 1,500 pages is most of a year's black printing. Schoolwork, invoices and the odd boarding pass are all light-coverage pages, and on that diet the rating holds up well.

When I change the black, do the color cartridges need changing too?

No. Each of the four cartridges in this platform is an independent, self-contained unit in its own slot. The black comes out and the new black goes in; the cyan, magenta and yellow are untouched and are only replaced when their own levels run down. There are no companion parts involved in a black change on these machines.

When should I order, and where does the cartridge come from?

Order when the printer first warns that toner is low — the warning is deliberately early, and it leaves comfortable slack for delivery. Your cartridge is dispatched from the closest of our warehouses in IL, PA, GA and CA. Waiting until printed pages actually fade is leaving it too late; fading is the last signal, not the first.

What protection does this purchase carry?

Every Clever Supplies compatible cartridge is covered by a one-year warranty against defects, and your purchase can be returned free of charge at any time within the first year — the full terms are set out on the shipping and returns page. Support is staffed Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM CST if anything needs sorting out.
