Frequently Asked Questions

The low-toner warning has just appeared on our C480 — how urgent is it?

More urgent than the same warning on a big office machine, and the reason is simple arithmetic: this yellow is a 1,000-page cartridge. The reserve that remains after a warning is a share of the cartridge's capacity, so on the CLT-Y404S that reserve is a modest number of pages — a week of color work in a busy small office, far less if a color-heavy job lands. The sensible habit with this platform is to order the replacement the day the warning shows and fit it when the colors start to drift.

How is this yellow rated, and what does that mean for our printing?

The CLT-Y404S is rated at 1,000 pages measured at 5% coverage, the industry's standard yardstick. The Xpress C480 in a small office prints a mixture — letters that barely touch the yellow, charts and letterheads that use some, the occasional photograph that uses a great deal. Your real total will land somewhere under the rating, and the gap between the two is set entirely by how much color your pages carry.

Is this the right yellow for the Xpress C480?

Yes. The CLT-Y404S is the listed yellow supply for the Xpress C480, and the same cartridge also fits the Xpress C430, Xpress C430W and Xpress C480FW. Match the code on the cartridge you remove and you cannot go wrong: black for this machine is the CLT-K404S, while cyan and magenta are their own cartridges in the same 404S family, each changed separately as it runs down.

What part does yellow play in an ordinary office page?

More than you would guess from looking at the page. The yellow in a company logo, the shading in a spreadsheet chart, the warmth in a product photo, the green of a "paid" stamp — all of it is this cartridge at work. A page can look mostly black and white while still drawing steadily on the yellow, which is why the level falls even in offices that would swear they hardly print in color.

What does the cartridge cost to run?

The CLT-Y404S is $76.50 for a rated 1,000 pages — about 7.65 cents of yellow per page at standard coverage, sold as a single cartridge. That is the true shape of running a compact color printer: the machine itself is small and inexpensive, and the colors are bought one modest cartridge at a time. Ordering at the warning keeps the printer working and the arithmetic predictable.

What cover do we get with this compatible cartridge?

A one-year warranty against defects, and free returns at any point during the first year if the cartridge is not right for you — the full terms are on our shipping and returns page. Support is available Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM CST, and deliveries leave from our IL, PA, GA and CA warehouses, so a replacement ordered at the warning is rarely more than a short wait away.
