Our prints have started coming out blue and purple — could the yellow be to blame?

Very likely, yes. Color on paper is a balance, and yellow is the counterweight to blue: when the CLT-Y404S runs low in an Xpress C430W, the blues stop being corrected and take over the page. Skies go violet, greens slide towards teal and then blue, and skin tones pick up an unnatural cool cast. Because yellow is so pale on its own, a failing yellow cartridge rarely announces itself with pale prints — it announces itself with wrong ones.

How can I tell which color is actually failing?

Print something with separate blocks of green, red and blue. Green is the tell-tale: it is mixed from cyan and yellow, so a green patch that comes out blue points straight at the yellow supply, while a red patch turning orange points at magenta. Checking the printer's own toner levels confirms the suspicion. On the C430W platform the CLT-Y404S is the yellow in question, and swapping it restores the balance in a couple of minutes.
