This is the stock-up pack for Brother's small INKvestment family: our compatible LC404 set of 9 — 3 black + 2 cyan + 2 magenta + 2 yellow cartridges — every one rated up to 750 pages in accordance with ISO/IEC 24711. It serves only the three printers on Brother's official LC404 list: MFC-J1205W, MFC-J1205W XL and MFC-J1215W.

The mix follows how these printers actually consume ink: black does the document work and empties roughly twice as fast as any single color, so the spares in this pack are weighted to black instead of forcing a second full set of colors on you. LC404 stays a single-tier family even in bulk — there is no LC404XL version of this pack or of any LC404 cartridge. And the family's boundary holds here too: this set does not fit the MFC-J4335DW or MFC-J4535DW, which Brother's official Q&A assigns to LC406, nor any LC401 or LC402 printer.
Each cartridge carries a new compatible chip that reports ink levels. Brother's official “Cannot Detect Ink Volume” support page names this whole LC40x generation — LC401, LC402, LC404 and LC406 models are listed on it — and warns that with non-genuine ink the machine may or may not detect the ink volume. No official Brother source we could find claims a firmware update blocks compatible cartridges in this generation, so we make no such claim here either; the detection warning above is the honest, complete picture. Every cartridge in the set is covered by our lifetime warranty, with free returns for the first year.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is inside the box?
3 Black + 2 Cyan + 2 Magenta + 2 Yellow — LC404 cartridges (LC404BK, LC404C, LC404M, LC404Y), each rated up to 750 pages in accordance with ISO/IEC 24711. Yields are per cartridge; we never add colors into a single total.
Which printers does this set fit?
Only the three small INKvestment models on Brother's official LC404 list: MFC-J1205W, MFC-J1205W XL and MFC-J1215W.
Why does the pack hold three black cartridges but two of each color?
Because that is the order the slots empty in document printing: black runs out well ahead of any single color. The pack is weighted to the real consumption pattern, so you are not left holding spare colors with no black to print with.
Will my printer recognize these compatible cartridges?
Each cartridge carries a new compatible chip that reports ink levels to the printer. Brother's own support guidance for this generation — its “Cannot Detect” / “Cannot Detect Ink Volume” pages — states plainly that with non-genuine ink the machine may or may not detect the cartridge or its ink volume, and that Brother cannot guarantee optimum performance and reliability with ink of other specifications. We print that warning here instead of promising recognition we cannot guarantee: seat each cartridge firmly until it clicks, keep fingers off the chip contacts, and if a detection message appears, remove and reseat that cartridge and restart the printer.
Will this set fit my MFC-J4335DW or MFC-J4535DW?
No. Brother's own official Q&A answer states it directly: the MFC-J4335DW and MFC-J4535DW are NOT compatible with LC404 cartridges; both use LC406 INKvestment Tank cartridges. Seller listings that attach LC404 to those models are wrong.
Is there an LC404XL version of this pack with higher yields?
No. LC404 has one tier only — Brother publishes no XL cartridge in this family, in any color, so there is no XL bulk pack either. The 750-page rating on every cartridge in this box is the family's genuine rating.
Can I install part of the set and keep the rest sealed?
Yes. The slots are independent: fit what has emptied, keep the remaining cartridges sealed until their turn. Nothing in the pack has to be installed together.
Set of 9 or set of 4 — which should I choose?
The set of 4 is one complete refill — one cartridge per slot. This set of 9 is the same cartridges weighted for steady use: a full refill plus the spares (extra blacks first) that a regularly printing J1205W-family machine actually goes through. Occasional printing: the set of 4. A printer that works every week: this pack.
What about firmware updates?
Brother's official “Cannot Detect Ink Volume” page names the LC40x generation, LC404 models included, and warns that non-genuine ink may or may not be detected. No official Brother statement that a firmware update blocks compatible LC404 cartridges was found, and none is claimed here.
Is this a genuine Brother product?
No — Clever Supplies compatible cartridges built to the LC404 specifications, each with a new compatible chip, labeled compatible on the box and on this page.
What warranty and returns does the set carry?
Every cartridge in the set carries our lifetime warranty, with free returns within the first year.
What should I check before ordering?
Model name first — MFC-J1205W, MFC-J1205W XL or MFC-J1215W only — then the LC404 code on your old cartridges. If your printer is an MFC-J4335DW/J4535DW or any other LC406 model, stop: you need the LC406 family, not this set.
