This is our compatible LC404C cyan cartridge — one of the three colors in Brother's single-tier LC404 family, rated up to 750 pages in accordance with ISO/IEC 24711, exactly the rating Brother publishes for every cartridge in this family. It serves the three printers on Brother's official LC404 list: MFC-J1205W, MFC-J1205W XL and MFC-J1215W.

Colors in a four-slot printer do not empty together; they empty one slot at a time, on the schedule of what you actually print. That is why LC404 is listed as single colors as well as sets: when cyan runs out, this cartridge is the whole job — the black, magenta and yellow already in the machine stay where they are. Two things this cartridge is not: there is no “LC404XL” cyan (LC404 has one tier only), and LC404C is not interchangeable with LC401C, LC402C or LC406C — each LC40x family is its own cartridge body, and LC404 does not fit the MFC-J4335DW or MFC-J4535DW, which Brother's official Q&A assigns to LC406.
The cartridge carries a new compatible chip that reports ink levels. Brother's official “Cannot Detect Ink Volume” support page names this whole LC40x generation — LC401, LC402, LC404 and LC406 models are listed on it — and warns that with non-genuine ink the machine may or may not detect the ink volume. No official Brother source we could find claims a firmware update blocks compatible cartridges in this generation, so we make no such claim here either; the detection warning above is the honest, complete picture. Covered by our lifetime warranty, with free returns for the first year.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which printers does this cyan cartridge fit?
The three models on Brother's official LC404 list: MFC-J1205W, MFC-J1205W XL and MFC-J1215W.
How many pages does the LC404C yield?
Up to 750 pages — Brother's published rating for the LC404 family, in accordance with ISO/IEC 24711. Every LC404 cartridge, colors and black alike, carries the same 750-page rating.
Can I replace just the cyan cartridge?
Yes. The four slots are independent: release the empty cyan, click this one into the C slot, and leave the other three cartridges untouched. There is no need to change colors that still have ink.
Will my printer recognize this compatible cartridge?
This cartridge carries a new compatible chip that reports ink levels to the printer. Brother's own support guidance for this generation — its “Cannot Detect” / “Cannot Detect Ink Volume” pages — states plainly that with non-genuine ink the machine may or may not detect the cartridge or its ink volume, and that Brother cannot guarantee optimum performance and reliability with ink of other specifications. We print that warning here instead of promising recognition we cannot guarantee: seat the cartridge firmly until it clicks, keep fingers off the chip contacts, and if a detection message appears, remove and reseat the cartridge and restart the printer.
Is there an LC404XL cyan with a higher yield?
No. LC404 is a single-tier family — Brother publishes no XL version of any LC404 color. Listings using the LC404XL name are seller inventions.
Will this fit my MFC-J4335DW or MFC-J4535DW?
No. Brother's own official Q&A answer states it directly: the MFC-J4335DW and MFC-J4535DW are NOT compatible with LC404 cartridges; both use LC406 INKvestment Tank cartridges, a different body.
Is LC404C the same cartridge as LC401C or LC406C?
No. LC401, LC402, LC404 and LC406 are four separate LC40x families with different cartridge bodies — the cyan of one family fits none of the others, however close the codes look.
What about firmware updates?
Brother's official “Cannot Detect Ink Volume” page names the LC40x generation, LC404 models included, and warns that non-genuine ink may or may not be detected. No official Brother statement that a firmware update blocks compatible LC404 cartridges was found, and none is claimed here.
How do I install it?
Open the ink cover, release the old cyan cartridge with its lever, slide the new one into the C slot until it clicks, and keep fingers off the chip contacts. Match the slot letter, not just the color cap.
Is this a genuine Brother cartridge?
No — it is a Clever Supplies compatible cartridge built to the LC404C specification, with a new compatible chip, labeled compatible on the box and on this page.
What warranty and returns does it carry?
A lifetime warranty — a cartridge that fails to perform is replaced — and free returns within the first year.
What should I check before ordering?
Confirm the model is MFC-J1205W, MFC-J1205W XL or MFC-J1215W, and that your old cartridge reads LC404C. If it reads LC401C, LC402C or LC406C, your printer belongs to a different family.
