This is the complete refill for Brother's small INKvestment family: our compatible LC404 set of 4 — one black, cyan, magenta and yellow cartridge — each rated up to 750 pages in accordance with ISO/IEC 24711. It serves only the three printers on Brother's official LC404 list: MFC-J1205W, MFC-J1205W XL and MFC-J1215W. LC404 is a single-tier family: there is no LC404XL, whatever some listings claim.

One boundary matters more with LC404 than with any other LC40x family: LC404 does not fit the MFC-J4335DW or MFC-J4535DW. Brother's official Q&A answer says so in plain words — those models use LC406. Seller lists that show LC404 for them are wrong, and this set's compatibility list deliberately stops at the three J1205W-family models.

Each cartridge carries a new compatible chip that reports ink levels. Brother's official “Cannot Detect Ink Volume” support page names this whole LC40x generation — LC401, LC402, LC404 and LC406 models are listed on it — and warns that with non-genuine ink the machine may or may not detect the ink volume. No official Brother source we could find claims a firmware update blocks compatible cartridges in this generation, so we make no such claim here either; the detection warning above is the honest, complete picture. Every cartridge in the set is covered by our lifetime warranty, with free returns for the first year. Price basis, stated openly: this set's reference price comes from inkcartridges.com, part of the LD Products family of sites ($43.16), rather than the main ldproducts.com store, where no LC404 set is listed.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    What is inside the box?

    1 Black + 1 Cyan + 1 Magenta + 1 Yellow — LC404 cartridges (LC404BK, LC404C, LC404M, LC404Y), each rated up to 750 pages in accordance with ISO/IEC 24711. Yields are per cartridge; we never add colors into a single total.

Which printers does this set fit?

Only the three small INKvestment models on Brother's official LC404 list: MFC-J1205W, MFC-J1205W XL and MFC-J1215W.

Will this set fit my MFC-J4335DW or MFC-J4535DW?

No — and this is the most common LC404 mistake on the internet. Brother's own official Q&A answer states it directly: the MFC-J4335DW and MFC-J4535DW are NOT compatible with LC404 cartridges; both use LC406 INKvestment Tank cartridges. Seller listings that attach LC404 to those models are wrong.

    Is there an LC404XL tier?

No. Brother makes LC404 in a single tier only — there is no official “LC404XL” cartridge. Listings using that name are seller inventions; the genuine LC404 rating is 750 pages for every color, black included.

Will my printer recognize these compatible cartridges?

This cartridge carries a new compatible chip that reports ink levels to the printer. Brother's own support guidance for this generation — its “Cannot Detect” / “Cannot Detect Ink Volume” pages — states plainly that with non-genuine ink the machine may or may not detect the cartridge or its ink volume, and that Brother cannot guarantee optimum performance and reliability with ink of other specifications. We print that warning here instead of promising recognition we cannot guarantee: seat the cartridge firmly until it clicks, keep fingers off the chip contacts, and if a detection message appears, remove and reseat the cartridge and restart the printer.

    Is LC404 just a smaller LC406?

No. LC404 is its own small INKvestment cartridge body for the MFC-J1205W family; LC406 is the large INKvestment family. The two share no printers — a model takes one or the other, never both.

    What about firmware updates?

Brother's official “Cannot Detect Ink Volume” page names the LC40x generation, LC404 models included, and warns that non-genuine ink may or may not be detected. No official Brother statement that a firmware update blocks compatible LC404 cartridges was found, and none is claimed here.

Can I buy single LC404 colors?

We list the LC404 family as this set of 4 — the pack whose reference price was verified (on the LD family's inkcartridges.com, see the price note on this page). Single-color listings may follow; no price was invented for them.

Is this a genuine Brother product?

No — Clever Supplies compatible cartridges built to the LC404 specifications, each with a new compatible chip, labeled compatible on the box and on this page.

What warranty and returns does the set carry?

Every cartridge in the set carries our lifetime warranty, with free returns within the first year.

How should the cartridges be installed?

One slot at a time: release the old cartridge with its lever, slide the new one in until it clicks, and keep fingers off the chip contacts.

What should I check before ordering?

Model name first — MFC-J1205W, MFC-J1205W XL or MFC-J1215W only — then the LC404 code on your old cartridges. If your printer is an MFC-J4335DW/J4535DW or any other LC406 model, stop: you need the LC406 family, not this set.
