This is the standard-yield full refill for Brother's LC401 family: our compatible set of 4 with one black, cyan, magenta and yellow cartridge, each rated up to 200 pages in accordance with ISO/IEC 24711. It serves the three printers on Brother's official LC401 list: MFC-J1010DW, MFC-J1012DW and MFC-J1170DW.

A full set is the right buy when several colors run low together — and on this family it is worth knowing the alternative before you choose: the LC401XL tier refills the same printers at 500 pages per cartridge. This standard set is the lower-cost box; the XL set below is the endurance box. Neither fits the LC402, LC404 or LC406 families, whose cartridges carry different bodies.
Each cartridge carries a new compatible chip that reports ink levels. Brother's official “Cannot Detect Ink Volume” support page names this whole LC40x generation — LC401, LC402, LC404 and LC406 models are listed on it — and warns that with non-genuine ink the machine may or may not detect the ink volume. No official Brother source we could find claims a firmware update blocks compatible cartridges in this generation, so we make no such claim here either; the detection warning above is the honest, complete picture. Every cartridge in the set is covered by our lifetime warranty, with free returns for the first year.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is inside the box?
1 Black + 1 Cyan + 1 Magenta + 1 Yellow — standard-yield LC401 cartridges (LC401BK, LC401C, LC401M, LC401Y), each rated up to 200 pages in accordance with ISO/IEC 24711. Yields are per cartridge; we never add colors into a single total.
Which printers does this set fit?
The three models on Brother's official LC401 list: MFC-J1010DW, MFC-J1012DW and MFC-J1170DW.
Will my printer recognize these compatible cartridges?
This cartridge carries a new compatible chip that reports ink levels to the printer. Brother's own support guidance for this generation — its “Cannot Detect” / “Cannot Detect Ink Volume” pages — states plainly that with non-genuine ink the machine may or may not detect the cartridge or its ink volume, and that Brother cannot guarantee optimum performance and reliability with ink of other specifications. We print that warning here instead of promising recognition we cannot guarantee: seat the cartridge firmly until it clicks, keep fingers off the chip contacts, and if a detection message appears, remove and reseat the cartridge and restart the printer.
Should I choose this set or the LC401XL set?
Same printers, different fills: this standard set is 200 pages per cartridge; the LC401XL Set of 4 is 500 pages per cartridge. Light, occasional printing — this set. Regular document work — the XL set works out fewer changes and a lower cost per page.
Can I mix set cartridges with LC401XL singles?
Yes. Both tiers fit the same three printers and each slot is independent — replace colors as they empty, in whichever tier you choose.
Is the MFC-J1800DW covered?
No. It appears in some seller listings but not on Brother's official LC401 page, so it is not in our list.
Is this a genuine Brother product?
No — Clever Supplies compatible cartridges built to the LC401 specifications, each with a new compatible chip, labeled compatible on the box and on this page.
What warranty and returns does the set carry?
Every cartridge in the set carries our lifetime warranty, with free returns within the first year.
Does this set fit LC404 or LC406 printers?
No. LC404 and LC406 are separate LC40x families with different cartridge bodies — an LC401 set fits only the three LC401 printers named here.
What about firmware and detection warnings?
Brother's official “Cannot Detect Ink Volume” page names the LC40x generation and warns that non-genuine ink may or may not be detected. We found no official Brother statement that a firmware update blocks these cartridges, and we make no such claim.
How should the cartridges be installed?
One slot at a time: release the old cartridge with its lever, slide the new one in until it clicks, keep fingers off the chip contacts.
What should I check before ordering?
Model name first (MFC-J1010DW, MFC-J1012DW or MFC-J1170DW), cartridge code second (LC401 or LC401XL on the old cartridges). Any other LC40x code means a different family.
