This is the XL High Yield bulk refill for Brother's LC401 family: our compatible set of 9 with 3 black + 2 cyan + 2 magenta + 2 yellow (all xl), every cartridge rated up to 500 pages in accordance with ISO/IEC 24711. It serves the three printers on Brother's official LC401 list: MFC-J1010DW, MFC-J1012DW and MFC-J1170DW.

The 9-pack matches how these printers actually consume ink — black roughly twice as fast as any single color — so the spare cartridges are blacks, not a forced second set of colors. Like everything in this family, it fits none of the LC402, LC404 or LC406 printers; those are separate cartridge bodies.
Each cartridge carries a new compatible chip that reports ink levels. Brother's official “Cannot Detect Ink Volume” support page names this whole LC40x generation — LC401, LC402, LC404 and LC406 models are listed on it — and warns that with non-genuine ink the machine may or may not detect the ink volume. No official Brother source we could find claims a firmware update blocks compatible cartridges in this generation, so we make no such claim here either; the detection warning above is the honest, complete picture. Every cartridge in the set is covered by our lifetime warranty, with free returns for the first year.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this a genuine Brother product?
No — Clever Supplies compatible cartridges built to the LC401XL specifications, each with a new compatible chip, labeled compatible on the box and on this page.
What warranty and returns does the set carry?
Every cartridge in the set carries our lifetime warranty, with free returns within the first year.
Does this set fit LC402, LC404 or LC406 printers?
No — those are separate LC40x families with different cartridge bodies. This set fits only the three LC401 printers named here.
What about firmware and detection?
Brother's official “Cannot Detect Ink Volume” page names the LC40x generation and warns non-genuine ink may or may not be detected; no official Brother statement about firmware blocking these cartridges was found, and none is claimed here.
How should the cartridges be installed?
One slot at a time: release, slide in until it clicks, keep fingers off the chip contacts, and run a print quality check after changing several colors at once.
What should I check before ordering?
Model name (MFC-J1010DW, MFC-J1012DW or MFC-J1170DW) and the LC401/LC401XL code on your old cartridges. Other LC40x codes mean a different family.
What is inside the box?
3 Black + 2 Cyan + 2 Magenta + 2 Yellow (all XL) — XL High Yield LC401XL cartridges (LC401XLBK, LC401XLC, LC401XLM, LC401XLY), each rated up to 500 pages in accordance with ISO/IEC 24711. Yields are per cartridge; we never add colors into a single total.
Which printers does this set fit?
The three models on Brother's official LC401 list: MFC-J1010DW, MFC-J1012DW and MFC-J1170DW.
Will my printer recognize these compatible cartridges?
This cartridge carries a new compatible chip that reports ink levels to the printer. Brother's own support guidance for this generation — its “Cannot Detect” / “Cannot Detect Ink Volume” pages — states plainly that with non-genuine ink the machine may or may not detect the cartridge or its ink volume, and that Brother cannot guarantee optimum performance and reliability with ink of other specifications. We print that warning here instead of promising recognition we cannot guarantee: seat the cartridge firmly until it clicks, keep fingers off the chip contacts, and if a detection message appears, remove and reseat the cartridge and restart the printer.
How does this compare with the standard LC401 set?
Same printers, bigger fills: 500 pages per cartridge here against 200 in the standard LC401 set. If your printer empties standard cartridges quickly, this is the tier that fixes it.
Can I install part of the set and keep the rest sealed?
Yes — slots are independent and tiers mix, so replace colors as they empty and keep unopened cartridges sealed.
Is the MFC-J1800DW covered?
No. It is a seller-listing addition, not a model on Brother's official LC401 page, and it is not claimed here.
