MFC-J1205W XL Ink — One Tier Only, and the LC406 Boundary
Brother’s official specifications for the J1205W series name three LC404 printers, and the MFC-J1205W XL is one of them. The MFC-J1205W XL is the XL-bundled variant of the MFC-J1205W — listed separately in Brother’s official LC404 specifications and taking exactly the same cartridges. It takes LC404 cartridges — LC404BK, LC404C, LC404M and LC404Y — a single-tier family rated up to 750 pages for every color, black included, in accordance with ISO/IEC 24711. There is no official LC404XL cartridge, whatever some listings claim.
For the XL-bundled MFC-J1205W XL, the LC406 boundary is the expensive line to cross. The MFC-J4335DW and MFC-J4535DW look like near neighbors in seller lists, but Brother answered the question officially: those INKvestment Tank models take LC406, a different cartridge body, and nothing on this page fits them. The reverse holds as well — LC406 cartridges do not fit this printer — so an order placed across that line buys ink this machine cannot use at all.
The XL in this model's name describes its bundle, not a bigger cartridge waiting on this shelf: every LC404 here is rated at up to 750 pages, so compare pack prices, not tiers. One $16.49 single answers one empty color, because colors are replaced one at a time and the rest keep their ink. The $58.74 Set of 4 is the cheaper full refresh, while the $119.34 Set of 9 — 3 black and 2 of each color — fits owners who would rather pay once and keep printing.
Which LC404 should you buy?
- One color ran out: replace just that color — black, cyan, magenta and yellow singles are $16.49 each.
- Full refresh: the Set of 4 ($58.74) replaces all four positions in one box.
- Print every week: the Set of 9 ($119.34) stocks 3 black and 2 of each color.
Chip, ink and everyday use
Each LC404 on this page carries a new compatible chip, and the honest limit sits in Brother's own "Cannot Detect Ink Volume" guidance for this generation: with non-genuine ink the printer may or may not detect the volume. We print that warning rather than promise recognition, so treat a doubtful level reading as a prompt to check, not as a reason to discard a cartridge that is still printing well. Lifetime warranty with 1-year free returns.
