MFC-J1215W Ink — One Tier Only, and the LC406 Boundary
Brother’s official specifications for the J1205W series name three LC404 printers, and the MFC-J1215W is one of them. The MFC-J1215W is the third model in Brother’s official LC404 specifications for the J1205W series. It takes LC404 cartridges — LC404BK, LC404C, LC404M and LC404Y — a single-tier family rated up to 750 pages for every color, black included, in accordance with ISO/IEC 24711. There is no official LC404XL cartridge, whatever some listings claim.
Start a J1215W order by ruling out the neighboring family, not by comparing prices. Brother's official Q&A is clear that the MFC-J4335DW and MFC-J4535DW are not LC404 printers at all — they run LC406, on a different cartridge body, and no cartridge here will fit them. LC406 is equally useless in the MFC-J1215W. Seller lists that place those popular INKvestment Tank models beside LC404 are simply wrong, and following one is the fastest way to pay for ink that prints nothing.
As the third model in the LC404 specifications, the MFC-J1215W shares the family's single price logic: each cartridge is rated at up to 750 pages, so a color is worth replacing only when it is the one that ran out — the other three still hold usable ink. Singles are $16.49; stepping to the Set of 4 at $58.74 makes sense at a full refresh, and the Set of 9 at $119.34, with 3 black and 2 of each color, is the stock-up choice for steady weekly printing.
Which LC404 should you buy?
- One color ran out: replace just that color — black, cyan, magenta and yellow singles are $16.49 each.
- Full refresh: the Set of 4 ($58.74) replaces all four positions in one box.
- Print every week: the Set of 9 ($119.34) stocks 3 black and 2 of each color.
Chip, ink and everyday use
A new compatible chip rides in every cartridge here, so why does Brother still urge caution? Its official "Cannot Detect Ink Volume" page names this generation and warns that, with non-genuine ink, the machine may or may not detect the ink volume. We repeat that warning instead of promising recognition — a level display is guidance, not a verdict that a cartridge has stopped earning its cost. Lifetime warranty with 1-year free returns.
