This is our compatible LC404M magenta cartridge for the three small INKvestment printers on Brother's official LC404 list — MFC-J1205W, MFC-J1205W XL and MFC-J1215W — rated up to 750 pages in accordance with ISO/IEC 24711, the single rating Brother gives the whole LC404 family.

Color consumption is never even. A printer that spends its life on photos, charts and color documents can empty magenta while cyan and yellow still show ink, because each color is spent by what is actually on the page. LC404's answer is the individual slot: this magenta replaces the one empty cartridge and nothing else. The family has exactly one tier — there is no official LC404XL magenta — and its boundaries are strict: LC404M fits neither the LC401/LC402 printers nor the LC406 INKvestment Tank models, and the MFC-J4335DW and MFC-J4535DW take LC406, not LC404, as Brother's own official Q&A confirms.
The cartridge carries a new compatible chip that reports ink levels. Brother's official “Cannot Detect Ink Volume” support page names this whole LC40x generation — LC401, LC402, LC404 and LC406 models are listed on it — and warns that with non-genuine ink the machine may or may not detect the ink volume. No official Brother source we could find claims a firmware update blocks compatible cartridges in this generation, so we make no such claim here either; the detection warning above is the honest, complete picture. Covered by our lifetime warranty, with free returns for the first year.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many pages does the LC404M yield?
Up to 750 pages — Brother's published rating for the LC404 family, in accordance with ISO/IEC 24711. All four LC404 cartridges share the same rating, so no color in this family is a “bigger” fill than another.
Which printers does this cartridge fit?
The three models on Brother's official LC404 list: MFC-J1205W, MFC-J1205W XL and MFC-J1215W.
My magenta ran out before the other colors. Is that normal?
Yes. Each color is consumed by what you print — photos, charts and color documents draw the three colors unevenly — and each slot empties on its own schedule. Replacing the magenta alone is the intended refill; the other cartridges stay in place.
Will my printer recognize this compatible cartridge?
This cartridge carries a new compatible chip that reports ink levels to the printer. Brother's own support guidance for this generation — its “Cannot Detect” / “Cannot Detect Ink Volume” pages — states plainly that with non-genuine ink the machine may or may not detect the cartridge or its ink volume, and that Brother cannot guarantee optimum performance and reliability with ink of other specifications. We print that warning here instead of promising recognition we cannot guarantee: seat the cartridge firmly until it clicks, keep fingers off the chip contacts, and if a detection message appears, remove and reseat the cartridge and restart the printer.
Will this fit my MFC-J4335DW or MFC-J4535DW?
No. Brother's own official Q&A answer states it directly: those models are NOT compatible with LC404 cartridges; both use LC406 INKvestment Tank cartridges. Seller listings that attach LC404 to them are wrong.
Is there a high-yield LC404XL magenta?
No. Brother publishes LC404 in a single tier only. “LC404XL” is a seller-invented name, not an official cartridge, for magenta or any other color.
What about firmware updates?
Brother's official “Cannot Detect Ink Volume” page names the LC40x generation, LC404 models included, and warns that non-genuine ink may or may not be detected. No official Brother statement that a firmware update blocks compatible LC404 cartridges was found, and none is claimed here.
Can I mix this cartridge with the ones already in my printer?
Yes. The slots are independent and every LC404 cartridge works alongside the others in any combination of new and part-used — replace whichever color empties, whenever it empties.
How should it be installed?
Open the ink cover, release the old magenta with its lever, slide the new cartridge into the M slot until it clicks, and keep fingers off the chip contacts.
Is this a genuine Brother cartridge?
No — it is a Clever Supplies compatible cartridge built to the LC404M specification, with a new compatible chip, labeled compatible on the box and on this page.
What warranty and returns does it carry?
A lifetime warranty — a cartridge that fails to perform is replaced — and free returns within the first year.
What should I check before ordering?
Confirm the model is MFC-J1205W, MFC-J1205W XL or MFC-J1215W, and that your old cartridge reads LC404M. Check the code letter, not only the cap color: LC404C is the cyan, and LC401M/LC406M belong to other families.
