Frequently Asked Questions

Pages from our SCX-4728FD carry the same faint mark down every sheet — is the toner to blame?

Almost certainly not. Toner running low fades the whole page evenly; a mark repeating at the same place on sheet after sheet points to the imaging unit, the MLT-R103, which is rated around 10,000 pages — roughly four cartridges. Fit this MLT-D103L for fading, but a repeating mark will survive the change and needs the imaging unit looked at.

How much of this cartridge's life will faxes take?

That depends on the line. Every received fax prints, day and night, so a busy number can quietly consume a third or more of the 2,500-page rating without anyone choosing to print anything. Sent faxes use no toner — the machine only scans them. Count received pages when you estimate how long a cartridge will last.

How many pages should we realistically expect in mixed fax, copy and print use?

Plan on the full rating spread across all three streams: 2,500 pages of whatever lands on paper. An SCX-4728FD producing 350 combined pages a month gets about seven months from one cartridge at $35.06 — roughly 1.4 cents a page. Heavy graphics pull the count down; plain text stretches it.

When does it make sense to swap the cartridge in?

When output fades, not when the warning first appears — the warning is set cautiously, with a few hundred pages in reserve. The exception is a fax line that must never produce an unreadable page: there, swap on the warning and keep the part-used cartridge as an emergency spare.

How do we check we are ordering the right replacement?

Match the code on the cartridge you take out: MLT-D103L. That same code serves the SCX-4729FD and the ML-2950ND, ML-2955DW and ML-2955ND printers, which is why several model names lead to this one cartridge. The code is a surer guide than the badge on the machine.

What warranty and returns come with this cartridge?

Twelve months of warranty cover, and returns that cost you nothing across the same twelve months if the cartridge leaks, streaks or fails early — the shipping and returns page carries the terms. Support runs Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM CST; dispatch is from IL, PA, GA and CA.
