Frequently Asked Questions

How can we tell how much printing is left in the SCX-4728's current cartridge?

The machine's supplies information — printed from its menu as a status or supplies report — shows the toner level and the page count the current unit has produced. Compare that count with the 2,500-page rating of an MLT-D103L and you have a fair estimate of what remains. Fading output is the other, blunter signal that the end is close.

How does the running cost of the SCX-4728 look on this cartridge?

Divide the $35.06 price by the 2,500-page rating and toner comes to roughly 1.4 cents a page for everyday documents. Heavy graphics push the real figure up a little; plain memos pull it down. Either way, it is the high-yield fill that keeps the number at that level rather than the higher one a smaller cartridge would produce.

Will this cartridge outlast the one the SCX-4728 came with?

In all likelihood, comfortably. Machines of this generation shipped with a small starter unit whose fill is a fraction of a retail cartridge's. This MLT-D103L carries the full 2,500-page fill, so the interval before the next change is one most owners notice as soon as the first full cartridge goes in.

Is the high-yield cartridge the right choice, or should we buy the standard one?

The standard MLT-D103S is rated at 1,500 pages against this unit's 2,500. For an SCX-4728 in weekly use the L is the cheaper page and means fewer changes; the S argues for itself only on a machine that prints so rarely that a cartridge of either size would last for years.

Which other models share this cartridge?

Besides the SCX-4728, the MLT-D103L is listed for the SCX-4729FD and for the ML-2950ND, ML-2955DW and ML-2955ND printers. If one of those is your second machine, the same cartridge restocks both. Matching the code on the label of the unit you remove is always the safest confirmation.

If this cartridge leaks or streaks in its first year, what can we do?

Send it back. The cartridge is warranted for a year, with free returns across the same period — the shipping and returns page explains how to start one. Support is available Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM CST, and orders are dispatched from our warehouses in IL, PA, GA and CA.
