Frequently Asked Questions

What does the 4,000-page rating on this MB491 cartridge actually mean?

It means the 44574701 was measured under the standard test method, where pages carry a modest, typical amount of text coverage. At $28.45, that rating works out to about 0.71 cents per page. Your MB491's real count will swing around the rating: letters and reports track close to it, while pages packed with graphics, shaded tables or bold headings consume toner noticeably faster. Think of 4,000 as the reliable planning figure — roughly eight reams of paper.

Why do some users run out well before 4,000 pages?

Coverage is almost always the reason. The rating assumes light, everyday text; a page that is half graphics can use several times the toner of a plain letter. Nothing is wrong with the cartridge — the MB491 is simply being fed heavier pages than the test standard assumes.

Why is the cartridge identified as 44574701?

That is Oki's part number for this supply, and it is the identifier printed on the cartridge itself. Matching the number on the cartridge you remove from your MB491 is the surest way to reorder the identical supply, whatever name the printer goes by.

Is this a genuine Oki cartridge?

No — it is a compatible 44574701 sold under our Clever Supplies brand, built to the same specification and rated at the same 4,000 pages. The $28.45 price, instead of the original-brand price, is the whole point.

What happens if it fails early?

It is covered by a 1-year warranty and 1-year free returns; the details are on our shipping and returns page. If output fades early or the cartridge misbehaves, contact support Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM CST.

Where will my order be shipped from?

From the nearest of our four warehouses — Illinois, Pennsylvania, Georgia or California — that has stock, so most orders arrive within a few business days. You will find the wider family range on our Okidata toner page.
