What arrives for the 2550L in this set?

The L is the light model. Does light mean different cartridges?
No — light describes the printer's configuration and footprint, not its engine. The 2550L consumes the same Q3960A-series codes as the full 2550, which is why one set serves the range. When in doubt, read the code off the cartridge you are removing; the L on the badge never appears in the cartridge codes.
For a lightly used machine, is a whole set overkill?
It is the opposite problem the set solves: gentle use spreads cartridge changes across years, so ages drift far apart and color goes quietly lopsided. One set fitted together re-levels the palette, and thereafter the sealed-shelf pattern resumes — fit each next cartridge only when its predecessor is truly done. Shelf life in the sealed bag is measured in years, not months.
What should I check before blaming a cartridge for poor color?
Run the printer's calibration cycle first, and print a supplies status page to see the gauges side by side. If one color is near empty, the set answers it; if all four show healthy levels yet output is off, the separate imaging drum — not included here, and rarely needed — becomes the likely explanation.

How are the cartridges best stored between fitting?
Flat, sealed, in a cool dry cupboard away from windows. Toner is a dry powder and indifferent to waiting, so the discipline that matters is bookkeeping: mark the date on boxes as they are fitted and you will know your machine's real cartridge lifespan within a couple of cycles.
