Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly do I get in this drum and toner combo?
Three pieces in one box: one 330-2663 (PK496) drum unit rated at 30,000 pages, and two 330-8985 high yield black toner cartridges rated at 14,000 pages each. The drum and the toners are separate parts that work together in the printer — the toner cartridges supply the black powder, and the drum unit is the surface that transfers that toner onto the paper as a printed image.
Why are the drum and the toner separate parts in these printers?
Because they wear out at different speeds. A toner cartridge empties when its powder runs out — 14,000 pages for each 330-8985. The 330-2663 drum wears mechanically as it turns against the paper, and it is built to last much longer, 30,000 pages in this case. Building them as separate units means you only replace the drum when the drum is actually worn, instead of throwing away a healthy drum every time a toner cartridge runs dry.
How do the page ratings in this combo line up with each other?
They are sized to run as a matched set. The two toner cartridges together deliver 28,000 pages (2 × 14,000), and the drum is rated at 30,000 pages — so one drum is designed to carry both toner cartridges in this box, with a small margin left over. In practice that means when the second toner runs out, the drum is nearing the end of its own rated life too, and the next combo starts the whole cycle fresh.
Which print problems tell me the drum is worn rather than the toner empty?
Toner running low gives you evenly faded pages. A worn 330-2663 drum shows up differently: streaks or lines running down the page, the same spot or mark repeating at regular intervals, gray smudging in the background, or print that looks patchy even right after you install a fresh toner cartridge. If a new 330-8985 goes in and the marks stay in exactly the same places, the drum is the part to change.
Which printers does this combo work with?
The 330-2663 drum and 330-8985 toner pairing fits the Dell Laser 2230d, Laser 2330d, Laser 2330dn, Laser 2350d, Laser 2350dn, Laser 3330dn and Multi-Function 3333dn. If your machine is one of those models, this one purchase covers both sides of its black printing system — the drum position and the toner position — in the codes the printer calls for.
Is this a genuine Dell combo, and what cover do I get?
No — both the drum unit and the two toner cartridges are compatible parts built to Dell's specifications and sold under our own Clever Supplies brand, which is what keeps the combo at $232.21. Everything in the box carries a one-year warranty and one-year free returns; the full terms are on our shipping and returns page.
