Frequently Asked Questions

What black cartridge goes in the M181fw?

The Color LaserJet Pro MFP M181fw uses the CF510A black cartridge, the HP 204A black, rated at up to 1,100 pages. This listing is one black cartridge at $31.74 for this fax-and-wireless multifunction model.

Why does the black cartridge drop even on days nobody prints?

Faxes. An incoming fax is a printed page, and faxes print in black only — a night of junk faxes and order confirmations spends this cartridge while the office is empty. On the M181fw, the fax tray's output is the silent consumer most owners forget to count.

Do copies and scans affect the cartridge the same way?

Copies yes, scans no. A copy is a print, so it draws black toner; a scan is just a digital file and uses none. If your level surprises you, add the week's copies and received faxes together before blaming the cartridge.

How do I check how much black is left?

The supplies status page — from the control panel or the machine's web interface — shows the black gauge beside the CF510A code. On a wireless model you can check it from your desk, which suits a machine that often sits in a hallway or back office.

Will changing the cartridge disturb the fax or wireless settings?

No. Fax numbers, wireless credentials and network settings are stored in the printer, not in the toner cartridge. Swap the CF510A in a minute and every setting is exactly where you left it.

What support and returns do I get?

The cartridge carries a 1-year warranty with 1-year free returns. We ship from warehouses in Illinois, Pennsylvania, Georgia and California; see the shipping and returns page for delivery details. Support is staffed Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM CST.

About This Black Cartridge for the M181fw

Of the machines in this family, the M181fw works its black cartridge hardest: prints, copies and a fax line that receives around the clock all draw on the same CF510A. This listing is that single cartridge — 204A black, up to 1,100 rated pages, $31.74.

Fax-driven consumption is the reason this model's owners reorder on a rhythm rather than on a warning light. One spare beside the machine covers the gap between the low-toner notice and the delivery truck.

Compatibility, in full, covers 3 models: the Color LaserJet Pro MFP M181fw, the Color LaserJet Pro M154a and the Color LaserJet Pro MFP M180n. Companion listings cover the companion cartridges: the CF511A cyan cartridge, the CF513A magenta cartridge, the CF512A yellow cartridge and the 204A four-color set.
