Frequently Asked Questions

Which cartridge does my M154a take in the black slot?

The Color LaserJet Pro M154a uses the CF510A black cartridge — the 204A black — rated at up to 1,100 pages. This listing is that cartridge on its own, one black unit at $31.74, for owners who reorder by printer model rather than by part number.

Why does the black run out first on a color printer?

Because most of what a small office prints is text: letters, invoices, forms, reports. Text pages draw almost entirely on the black cartridge, while the color cartridges sit nearly untouched until a graphic or photo page comes along. On an M154a, black is simply the working cartridge.

How do I check the black level on the M154a?

Print a supplies status page from the printer's control panel and the black level shows as a gauge next to the CF510A code. When the gauge drops low and pages start to look gray rather than black, the cartridge is telling you its 1,100-page rating is nearly spent.

Can I stretch a fading cartridge a little longer?

Briefly, yes. Remove it, rock it gently from side to side to level out the toner inside, and put it back. That buys a handful of clean pages — enough to finish a document — but it does not refill anything, and ordering the replacement the same day is the sensible move.

Is installation something I can do myself?

It takes about a minute and no tools. Open the cartridge door, pull the old unit straight out by its handle, slide the new CF510A in until it seats, and close the door. The printer is ready as soon as it finishes its start-up cycle.

What warranty and returns come with it?

This cartridge is covered by a 1-year warranty with 1-year free returns. Orders ship from our warehouses in Illinois, Pennsylvania, Georgia and California, and the shipping and returns page spells out the delivery side. Questions before you order? Support is available Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM CST.

About This Black Cartridge for the M154a

The M154a is an HP single-function color laser that sits on one desk and answers to one computer, and its black slot does most of the machine's real work. This page sells the cartridge that slot empties: one CF510A (204A black), rated at up to 1,100 pages, for $31.74.

A spare on the shelf beside the printer suits this model well — when the status page says the black is low, the swap happens the same morning instead of after a delivery wait. One code, one slot, one cartridge: that is the whole story here.
