Frequently Asked Questions
We shoot products for our online shop — why do the red labels look wrong in the prints?
Because the camera is honest and the cartridge is fading. A red label is reproduced almost entirely from magenta, and as the CLT-M404S runs down the printer lays that color thinner, so reds drift towards orange and lose the density that makes a label read as the same product the customer saw on screen. Proof prints are often where a dying magenta shows first, because you are comparing them against something — the screen, the shelf — instead of just reading them.
How far does one cartridge go when the work is photographs?
Much less far than the rating suggests, and that is coverage, not a defect. The 1,000 pages are counted at 5% of the page covered; a full-bleed product photograph covers nearly all of it, several times over in the magenta channel alone if the shot is warm-toned. Photo-heavy users should read the rating as a comparison figure between cartridges and expect their own count to be a fraction of it — the busier the color, the smaller the fraction.
Should we match on the printer's name or the cartridge's code?
Either route lands in the same place, and using both is best. The machine is the Xpress C480W; the cartridge it takes for magenta is the CLT-M404S, the code stamped on the supply you remove. The same cartridge also serves the Xpress C430, C430W and C480, and it works in a set with the CLT-K404S black and the cyan and yellow 404S cartridges.
What does the magenta in one photograph cost?
At standard coverage, about 7.65 cents a page — the cartridge is $76.50 for a rated 1,000 pages. A photograph spends several times the standard coverage, so cost each proof accordingly: still small money per sheet, but real money across a catalogue shoot, and worth counting when you decide how many test prints a listing gets. There are no bulk packs in this family to soften the figure; singles are how this platform is fed.
If we proof in greyscale, does the magenta get a rest?
Completely. Send a page as monochrome and the machine prints it from the black cartridge alone; the colors, this magenta included, take no part. Many sellers proof composition and layout in greyscale, then spend color pages only on the final check — a habit that can stretch a 1,000-page magenta across far more listings than printing every draft in color.
What warranty and returns cover it?
We back the cartridge with a one-year warranty against defects, and you can return it free of charge at any time during that first year — the full position is on our shipping and returns page. Orders are sent from our warehouses in IL, PA, GA and CA, and help is available on weekdays, 9 AM to 5 PM CST.
